easy trans question

Hey guys, I've read the “how to” article on changing the trans fluid and went and bought a filter
kit and some Mobile1 synthetic Fluid. (at $8 a quart...sheesh)

Okay, here are my questions. 1. The "how to" article said to put 2 quarts in and start the car,
then fill the remaining fluid with the car running and in gear. So I should put the car in Drive
and have someone hold the brakes while I fill? Is that right?

2. The Mobile1 said it works with all ATF fluids and replaces Subaru ATF so I am just looking
for any confirmation that I can add this type of fluid and it will work with whatever is already in
there.

Sorry for the simplistic questions but I couldn’t find the answers in the archives. Thank guys.
Blue

I haven't read the how-to but believe you must have misunderstood that. Just measure whatever you drain-out and replace with exactly that amount. Start the car, check for leaks, drive around the block to warm-up the fluid, then with the engine running and the car in park, pull the dipstick and confirm the level.

Mobil 1 should be fine. Others have used it with no problems.

Re: easy trans question

Thanks guys, I probably did misunderstand the "how to" article. Well I got the filter out and it
differs a little from the new one. The square box that points out towards the pan is a little more
square and longer than the one I took out. Think this will matter? The only thing I can see being
a problem is that the pan won't fit back on but it's only like 1/4 inch longer than the old one.

Re: easy trans question

Well as it turns out it is a problem. NAPA sold me the wrong part and didn't even carry the right one. I swear, everytime I buy a part for the SVX at a local parts dealer I end up returning it. Had to go to Subaru and they didn't even have it, I has to order it in.

Thanks for the help, Blue

Re: easy trans question

I have a copy of the same Tech Paper on ATM Filter & Oil Change, you are correct about adding two quarts and starting the engine, engaging the transmission and adding oil until full on the dip stick. I found this a little strage as well. Thank you looking into this and having this clearified. I just ordering a Filter Kit from Canada, kit+shipping+insurance to southern Japan is less than $18.00 dollars! (Rock Auto) best prices I have ever come across!
