alternator!

Help! I think my alternator has gone bad. I have one to put on it and want to make sure there is nothing major I need to do with taking the bad one off and putting the new one on!!!

Just had my 1992 for 2 months, but love it!

There are 4 - 12mm bolts that you need to worry about.

The 1st is a nut on the face of the idler pulley, under steering pump. Loosen this a couple of turns.

The 2nd is the long adjuster bolt that moves that idler pulley, It's not real easy to get to, I use a 12mm socket -> a wobbly extension -> a longer extension.

Now the belt can come off.

3rd and 4th are the two bolt that hold the Alternator in place...

If you have the little cover over your belts, of course that needs to come off first.

Make note...when relieving belt tension with the long bolt notice it has left hand threads.

It took me a good 10 minutes to figure that one out.

It also helps a lot if you loosen the bolt through the tensioner pulley. It lets the pulley flop around a bit. When I tried turning the tension bolt it kept trying to roll out of it's slot and I spent more time tapping it back in than actually turning it. Loosening the bolt through the pulley makes this much easier.

That was listed as step # 1 by Hocrest but is mandatory. . I would recommend a little grease on the long bolt threads as well! Then can always use an air ratchet and get on with your life. (is a long bolt!)
Take care,
Keith
