filter question

Then they started to put it on the later SVX's and also to retro fit with the filter kit. Maybe the fate and reliablity of the SVX would have been much different if it had the filter from the start.

I have a question??? Is that Subaru supplied tranny filter a screen or a paper element?
It's paper.

Thanks. No screen just paper. Tranny fluid flows easier than motor oil. I have checked, the SVX and 91` legacy use the same tranny filter.

So I had my SVX engine out and in pieces. My wife and I were sharing 'THE 91 Legacy Wagon" and the tranny was acting up. It was banging real hard when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Then on the way home last Tuesday, it started bucking and going form 1st to 3rd. The fluid was brown and two weeks ago it was okay. I took the original tranny filter off (170k) and put the one from the SVX on it. It helped the problem. Then I adjusted the tranny band and that helped also. There is still a slight bang when shifting from 1st to 2nd but that has been normal for the past 2 years.

I think I'll take out the filter and try it.

PermaCool says "between 10,000 and 50,000 miles" for the filter. i was going from memory and had 50k stuck in my head. there's no way i'd leave it in there that long, though. i'll probably change it whenever i change tranny fluid. its only a few bucks.

Unhappy filter change interval

Alan,
If we change oil filters at 3000 miles, up to 7000 miles if you use Fram X2 series, why would you go beyond 7000 miles for an ATF filter? Filters if changed frequently are a low cost way to extend tranny life. After 10000 miles you approach the point where the ATF by passes the filter element media and flows thru the filter as if there is no filter. If the filter can only filter for 3000 to 7000 miles, why leave it in longer? Bottom line: don't leave a filter in longer than it's ability to filter. End of lecture...

thanks for the lecture, but i will be changing tranny fluid once a year, and for me that will be less than 7000 miles. give PermaCool a lecture - THEY are the ones that say 10-50k. i just copied that from the instructions included with my filter kit.

PermaCool is a bit more conservative than SOA, they recommend changing the add-on filter at each tranny replacement!!!!!!!!

Why do you think the bypass valve is triggered at around 10K miles for a tranny filter?

Seems to me that the conditions and rationale for mileage based change of filters is quite different between motor oil and tranny fluid - blow-by gases, etc.

Please educate me, I may need to change filter types, i.e., summit

Lee,
I've developed my opinion for several reasons,
1. Replaced a tranny at 70,000--$2100 for a complete rebuild. This SVX had 63,000 on it when we bought it. Tranny started slipping after 1,000 miles.
2. After reading as much info as I could find on SVX tranny maintenance I concluded more maintenance is better than recommened or less maintenance.
3. I use Fram X2 series spin on filters for motor oil and ATF. Fram claims the X2 filter is good for 7000 miles and that it has filter media that filters particals smaller than any other filter. I would not go 7000 miles on normal motor oil, I use synthetic in all 3 cars. I have a spin on filter on one SVX for ATF, that tranny has synthetic ATF in it and I intend to change the filter at 7000, ATF at 14000. By doing these fluid and filter change intervals I'm doing nearly all I can to give the tranny a long life, this SVX
has 85,000 on the original tranny.

Luis.
Luis,
Check with SOA. There may have been a time limit to have the filter added.

i called subaru and they said ther was nothing noted about a tranny filter for my Vin#

if there is an issue that needs to be taken cared of, why put a time limit?

Found a TSB #165693. It says if your vin ends in a number higher than NH106285 you don't need the filter. I'd put one on any way

ADD ON FILTER

SOA had improvements done to trannys numbered higher than 106285 that SOA determined not to add the filter. Add one any way.
