CV Boot

While cleaning my engine and other parts of my car, I found that I have a torn front CV Boot. I could not find any how-to on it, and wondered if there are any suggestions, or cautions on doing this job. I plan on replacing both of the front ones at the same time I put on my new rotors. Thanks for any help or comments.

I think it's easier to just replace the entire axle rather than trying to replace just the CV boot.

Beav advised to take off the 3 bolts holding the base for the ball joint on instead of prying off the ball joint itself. That worked great for me. I didn't have a punch so I used a small allen wrench to knock out the pins holding the axle on. It is pretty easy to get them off. You mayl need 2 people to put it back on since you need to pull on the tire to get it out far enough to clear it to slide the axle back in.

There was something in the technical reference booklet about the front CV axles not using a regular inner DOJ and that grease for those was not sufficient for repacking the front boots - it is a free ring tripod joint (FTJ) and uses a special low friction grease.

I would also recommend replacing the whole axle - especially if the boot has been torn for a while and you have some nice road grime mixed in there tearing the joints up.

I too have a torn CV boot that is getting noisier every day...

I've gone around town talking to parts stores and the cheapest reman half-axle was at Pep-Boys for 79.99 with a 80.00 core charge. I bought my CV boot kit from Checker for ten bucks. Finally, some parts you don't have to sell your soul for!

Amendum: Can anybody with a service manual help out?

I had a similar issue with my Aerostar. I noticed the torn boot before it started to make any noise. Took the axle out, took the CV joint off the axle, sprayed the s**t out of it with brake cleaner until squeeky clean, packed with new grease, installed new boot which cost me $7, re-installed the axle and voila. The instructions did say to take the CV joint apart to clean it but my neighbor mechanic told me not to bother. It has worked so far. Just another option.

The boot is not torn very bad, and it has not been very long ago, and is not making any noise yet. I will probably try to clean and grease it first, and if that doesn't work, do the next level of maintenance.

That is a question of economics: the labor of repairing and risk of failure vs. cost of new unit.

Also, when fixing my Aerostar's CV joint, the instructions were to tap gently on the CV to separate it from the dirve shaft. Well, there was nothing gentle about what was required to actually separate the pieces. We put the shaft in a vise, put a block of wood on the CV joint, and gave it a really good whack with a large hammer. There was a metal split O ring on the shaft which went into a groove in the CV joint, and held the two together. I can't guarantee that this is the same set up on the SVX. Perhaps you could find a drawing somewhere.

Take note that the original CV boot on the SVX is special. If you look down to the smaller diameter of the boot you will see and o-ring in there. The purpose is to keep the boot from expanding when your doing 140 mph That is a lot of centrifugal force with the greese in the boot. The band requires a special tightening tool in order to obtain the correct tension on the boot. Now, if you only drive a max speed of say 75 mph, then use the after market parts.

the axles on this car are very sensitive.

i have replaced mine three times. whatever you do make sure it is done right. we have a cv axle specialist here and he just rebuilds mine. this last time i think he finally repaired them correctly. good luck.
