New rear wheel bearing dirty?
So last night I tackled my second rear wheel bearing replacement (drivers side this time) While I was cleaning off the shipping grease from the new bearing cones and race I noticed that when I wiped the race with a white paper towel I got a lot of dark residue on the towel. (This shipping grease is a clear vaseline type stuff) I then used some brake cleaner and it took quite a bit of wiping to get all the residue off. Have any of you mechanic types out there noticed this before? These bearings came in a Federal-Mogul box from my local auto-parts store (special order $63.00/set) and were sealed in a plastic bag inside the box. My Subaru dealer was out of stock.
Steve Two new rear wheel bearings + Mobil synthetic grease = very quiet SVX!!!

Mine (from a Subaru dealer) came packed in a greenish grease.
