nissan 300 ZX question....

I know this topic isnt about SVX's (sorry) But I was wondering if $6000 was a fair price for a 300 ZX with 126000 miles on it? Cuz i know these cars are still pricey and hold their value pretty well....I've wanted one of these cars for so long so thats why im asking. Im going for a test drive later today.

Thanks
Chris

if the 300ZX model is over '93, then I think it's a fair price. I would pay that much for a 300ZX ONLY IF it's in perfect condition, means that no engine work and no body work.

Go here and run the numbers:

They can give you a pretty good barometer of pricing.

You can also try www.kbb.com. That's the Blue Book site.

Thats a good price but make sure you take it to get looked at first. My friend just sold his Z for 6k. He thought it was in good shape when he sold it. but the guy who bought it took it in and it was only running off of 5 cylinders so he has spend like 3k to get if fixed. He sold it as is...so that guy is outta luck

Hi, Miles,

Frazier here.

The price may be OK but the cost of ownership would likely be high. The rear axle of 300ZXs have complicated linkages {whisper....passive steering } which wear out with mileage. If you buy the car "as is" be really sure you have it well checked by a mechanic who knows them

The cats would be expensive to replace, the turbos are likely to be near the end of useful life, and brakes give trouble like the SVX, also because of power/weight ratio.

Don't let me put you off, I love them. Just check carefully.

Joe

I absolutely disagree with doing this on a point of environmental hygeine.

Unleaded gas is laced with complex solvents, many of which are known carcinogens, ie they will give your kids, your neighbours and probably yourself cancer.

Cats burn these compounds at extreme temperatures and in theory when fully hot, totally eliminate them from exhaust gases.
With no cats you are venting large amounts of what are known as VOCs, volatile organic compounds, into the air of the street.

Keeping the cats right and in place is not merely a matter of passing some Dept of the Environment test, it is a matter of public health. Taking them off for the sake of a few bucks or a few horsepower or a louder exhaust note shows little regard for the health of the general public.

Way to go Leo

If it passes inspection, it is not letting through any undesirable chemicals.

Incidentally, my car is over 10 years old, Dec '91. When doing my test, I went to the garage to check the emissions before getting any nasty surprises. It was as clean as a whistle. The 3 cats do a very good job.

Wish Subaru/Fuji had been as thorough with the tranny.
