HELP! no reverse

Fellers,

my wife's '92 SVX LSL with 160k miles has just lost reverse. All other forward gears work perfectly but absolutely nothing when I go into reverse. The tranny is most likely the original and does have the external filter installed but has showed no signs of wearing such as slippage or hesitation. Please any suggestions or help!

thanks

Tdog

..........on a trailer if possible.

If you continue to drive it you may do more damage.

It could be something simple, but in my case the transmission needed rebuilding.

Yes. It stands a good chance of being ignored here.

The reverse function is controlled mechanically, whereas the changing of gears is done by solenoids. I would carefully check the shift linkage to be sure it functions properly. Try putting the shifter somewhere between PARK and REVERSE, and then somewhere between NEUTRAL and REVERSE. It may simply be out of alignment.

With the greatest of care, you might try the caveman technique:
Hit it with a big rock.

No, really. Don't run yourself over by trying this, but you can put it in reverse (with the parking brake set and wheels chocked) and crawl underneath and bang on the transmission with a brick. I've never tried this, but I have heard of it working successfully, and I can certainly imagine how it could.

Again, check the linkage carefully and try rough handling it just a bit. Hopefully a little tough love will do the trick. ...or you may just have to crack it open.

Fred Flintstone's Auto repair.

Didn't see this one before. I don't think I would recommend the Rock methoid

As it has all the other gears, it comes down to the reverse clutch, or the low/reverse brake. If it still has engine braking with the lever in 1st, it is the reverse clutch, If not it is the low/reverse brake. Does not matter either is terminal.

Harvey.

I interpreted the "just lost" part of "just lost reverse" as meaning it stopped working suddenly. If the clutches started failing, I would think that would be a gradual development. For that reason, I tend to think something is likely stuck, not worn. I suggest the Flintstones massage because there's a small chance it may loosen up whatever is causing the problem. Probably not, but a small chance is better than no chance.

I tend to agree with oab_au on this one though. It's not likely to cure itself. I'd still wager that something is jammed, not worn, but it's bad news either way. If it were mine, I'd beat the hell out of it. ...but then again, I do that to mine anyway, even when it's working.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the gasket between the oil pump and the tranny. The paper type gasket was replaced with a metal type gasket. The problem with the paper gasket was it would blow out. The symptoms are low oil pressure in reverse. The gasket is only arount $15. You just need to find a mechanic that will install it for you.

not to hijack the thread, but my 92 (177K) has had probs with
reverse since I got it, it is good when the car is cold, but once it has run for a while, reverse is only good if you feather the throttle. otherwise it lurches and bucks and is generally not happy. gasket? (hope hope)
Ive already replaced the 4eat in my daughters car, and was going to rebuild that one and put it in mine.
