News Paper Article from our friends up North
This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.
America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text f his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America! |

Just to clarify though, this was a broadcast from the early 70's and is not a direct reference to recent events.
There is a ton of mis-information floating around right now, like the phony Nostradamus "prediction", and we all need to make sure we treat this stuff with an appropriate dose of skepticism. It is an inspirational statement though, as long as you keep in it context. -Mike

One of the few the proud,
I remember seeing that in the 70's. It's just as applicable today, as it was then. Thanks for posting it. Larry III. |

Clarification
Thanx guys for the correction. I received that via email and being the young buck that I am, I was unaware for its origin.
To the men, women and children that lost their lives on 9/11/01. May the flag fly high. Your deaths will not be in vein. Although not on acitve duty I will gladly stand up and defend the freedom of this great nation. To all my Marine Corps Brethern that fell on 9/11/01. Semper Fi Devil Dogs. You will NEVER be forgotton. Once a Marine Always a Marine. Rest in Peace my brothers. Let us all never forget the events of 9/11/01, not like we could. Talk to the children and let them know what has happened. My 4 1/2 yr old asked me last night what happened in the accident. I told her some very bad men did some very bad things. Expecting to get many many more questions, thus all I got was a look of complete understanding. Teach the children my friends for they will carry the memories of these events to future generations. Thanx for listening. Wayne PS. Yes, even Marines cry. Last edited by oneothefewproud; 09-12-2001 at 01:07 PM. |

I for one will never forget where I was and what I was doing yesterday when I first heard the horrible news.
Just like I have never forgotten where I was and what I was doing in Nov. 1963 when I first heard the horrible news that President Kennedy was shot. I'm seething about yesterday's events. I was born and raised on the west side of Manhattan and I consider myself a New York City kid. I want retribution. I guess I'm not much of a Christian since I can't forgive this one. Larry III |

I know you asked Larry, but, Mr. Sinclair was referring to the US having to pull out of the Vietnam war. At the time, we were being lambasted by everyone for getting involved in the first place. This is from Mr. Sinclair's bio -- He died in 1984: "Gordon Sinclair's greatest achievement was his CFRB LET'S BE PERSONAL broadcast of June 5, 1973 - a broadcast which echoed around the world and which history will record as one of the most respected tributes from Canada to the people of the United States of America. The United States had just pulled out of the Vietnam War which ended in a stalemate - a war fought daily on TV, over radio and in the press. The war had divided the American people, and at home and abroad it seemed everyone was lambasting the United States. Outraged by what he saw and heard that morning, in his noon-hour broadcast Sinclair rose to the defense of the American people- and his voice was heard around the world - and as no Canadian had before - or since. For weeks afterwards, his words were repeated over and over again from thousands of radio stations - were read into the U. S. Congressional Records several times and, at the insistence of the American people, recorded for their keeping for posterity." If you'd like to listen to Mr. Sinclair's actual reading, and you have the realplayer plug-in, you can go here. http://www.rcc.ryerson.ca/schools/rt...e/am_text.html
