A funny thing happened on the way to getting SUBYDOO inspected

On friday afternoon Rosie & I took SUBYDOO ('97 SVX) to Delaware Motor Vehicle (DMV) to get the car inspected and reregistered. SUBYDOO's registration sticker expires on Oct. 15, 2003.

Anyway, we drove to the DMV. At the first inspection station, they test all your lights, wipers, etc. Everything worked fine.
We advanced to the second station where they conduct emissions testing.
Now the DMV instituted their new emissions testing. It uses the car's OBD II system to get the emissions readings.
When we reached the second station, the tester checked the car's VIN and asked us to leave the engine on, get out of the car and leave the doors open. We did what he asked. Then he threw a pad on the floor, knelt down and put his head under the dash. He got up, got a flashlight and started looking under the dash. I asked him what he was looking for. He said he was looking for the OBD II socket that was under the dash on Subarus. I then showed him where the socket was. It's on the right side of the steering column, located where the coin holder is on the '92 SVXes. He was incredulous. He kept insisting that Subarus always put the OBD II connection under the dash.
He connected the OBD II plug to the car's socket and took the readings. He then went to his computer to look up the results. He typed in 1997 Subaru and the only choices to appear were Impreza and Legacy. So the DMV's computer system did not have the SVX in it. I was grining from ear to ear. Rosie was stifling laughter. He tried again with the same results. He told us to stay with the car and he went to get his supervisor. We both had a good laugh after he left. In a few minutes he and his supervisor came out with a digital camera. the supervisor mumbled something at me, got in the passenger seat and took pictures of location of the SVX OBDII socket. The he got out and took some exterior photos of SUBYDOO . The supervisor left and the tester printed out the emissions statement. All the emissions blocks (HC, NO, & CO) were labeled NA. The statement said the car passed. We then drove from the inspection station to the office to pay the bill and get new stickers. We were both laughing like crazy.
It seems that the SVX is so rare that it's emissions numbers are not in the state's computers.

We left the DMV, laughing and went out to eat and drink.

Not necessarily in that order.

Great story. Luckily, we don' t have to go through that stuff here . . . yet.

We used to have an inspection system, but, for some reason, they discontinued it.

Now, when you register your car, an inspection consists of "checking the windshield for cracks."

Meanwhile, I had two neat comments in about three days. Shari and I were driving past some people waiting to get into Applebees a couple of weeks ago. I heard one of the gentlemen comment (quite loudly, I might add), "Now THAT'S a rare car."

A couple of days later, I was driving my son and his friend back to his friend's house. At a stoplight, a fellow in a Z28 Camaro pulled alongside and gave me a thumbs up. "What is that?" He asked. "Subaru SVX, all wheel drive, 230 horsepower" I replied. "Dammit. Schweet car." He replied. The light turned and we went leisurly on our way. It's still fun to be noticed.

Larry,

Which Jacobs office do you work for? I used to work for the Cincinnati office in Forest Park, now working for myself?

It's funny how the SVX doesn't register on some people's lists, so they don't know what to do with it.

'A-whut kind of car did yew say it were?'

'An SVX.'

'Is that some kind of SUV?'

Or the one time I've been pulled over in my SVX, for an expired plate in MI. For the 'Make, Model' blank, the officer wrote:

Subaru, Red

....Sweet! I once had a cop thank me for not running and saving
the state's money. (his gas?) Also was once let go at a sobriety
stop with open beers(!) My friend failed several tests, (he was driving...but by no means drunk, he's just uncoordinated) and that cop knew we were just a couple screwballs, and no harm!
(Disclaimer: In our cooler, after LONG mountain bike rides...the kind where you're not sure if you'll survive, we keep a frosty one
or two......because sometimes nothing tastes better. I don't even drink! Honest!) Oh well, we were all young and stupid once. I got a speeding ticket when I was a teen; and neither myself or the officer noticed the joint laying on the shifter boot the whole time!
Also once blew by about twenty cars in PA; one of those deals where two lanes goes back to one lane soon....and you know you can make it: easily 115 mph or so, 10 mins later I'm waved over by a trooper, and ticketed for 87 in a 55.....radioed from a plane! Haven't gotten one in 10 yrs.....knock, knock.
