Busy recently...Walbro fitted (aren't they fun to get at) and tested...works fine.

Pedal box in and bled up...just working on the clutch bleed still.

Fitted the spare rack, and also got Dessertrunner's bonnet catch mechanism after a recent road registration change.

I've got the inspection on Tuesday.

Here's some photos as promised.

First few are of the heads as finished. Standard 1997-1998 WRX (EJ20T) valves springs and retainers go in, no modifications required.

The factory hydraulic lash adjustors have been gutted, and modified to become solid buckets.

There's a gap of about 2.2mm which will be replaced by a small shim to set the valve clearances.

The heads have had a touch up...not a serious port, just a bit of a tidy up and as mentioned, now flowing about 170cfm at 10" water on the inlets. Not too bad.

Cam specs are 230 degrees duration at 0.050 with 10.4mm lift (there's 11mm till coil bind on the WRX springs) and slightly more duration and less lift on the exhaust. Cams are built up regrinds.

Also, here's a couple of photos of the new brake arrangements. Factory stuff gone, replaced with a Tilton pedal box and hydraulic handbrake. Master cylinder sizes are 0.75" rear and 0.7" fronts. Clutch is another 0.7" but I think that's wrong...combination of pedal length and pedal ratio changes, means I think a smaller one would be better.

Hydraulic handbrake is another 0.7"...locks the standard rears nicely from a pretty reasonable speed.

I'm not so confident...we are having some issues with the Megasquirt standalone installation...hopefully just a construction error, but regardless, the event next week is looking pretty shaky!!

what are you guys doing for crank and cam angle sensors? From what I understand ours are not compatible? but i don't know crap about the megasquirt...

We're using the factory Crank Angle sensor 1, with one of the 12 teeth removed...the Megasquirt then operates in an n-1 configuration...ie, we tell it it's a 12 tooth wheel (12) then we tell it one's missing (-1)...so it operates as if all 12 teeth are there even though it's only 11. It then uses the gap as a reference point so that it knows where it is.

It's a common way to run them...not sure why people have had trouble in the past?

So the ECU is sorted now...car runs perfectly. The ECU has an autotune function so some driving around this afternoon, making sure we hit all the load and RPM points, whilst a wideband O2 sensor is up its arse, has resulted in a really good tune.

This tune we did today is just a baseline so that we can do some testing tomorrow on the old dying motor, and then assemble and fit the new motor tomorrow night. I've got time booked at the dyno on Tuesday morning hoping to just fine tune things (like getting the IRIS system right with the new cams).

All going well, we'll be ready to rock Tuesday afternoon...maybe Wednesday.

I'm pretty chuffed that the ECU is working after some initial setbacks. Turns out the CAS was sending information that was too high in voltage for the ECU to deal with...a simple 10 cent resistor fixed it perfectly!

The car feels pretty strong...we G'teched it before we pulled the factory ECU out and it showed a 1/4 of 16.5 seconds with a trap speed of 84mph...Moroso calcs reckon it should have 166hp at the wheels...we haven't G'teched it again with the new standalone ECU...might try that tomorrow.

Here's hoping the test tomorrow goes well...in a way, we want things to break and fall off...that means come Friday, we'll be able to push a bit harder.

Here's the entry list...we're way down the back due to the level of event (it's an Asia Pacific round of the championship...one down from World Rally Championship level!!)

Cheers,
Matt

Had our test today...car went really well. Had changed some of the suspension settings (bump and rebound), and the previous wallowing has gone, replaced with a nice firm setting. To give you an indication, I'm a pretty big guy, and I can't push down the front end...doesn't even move a mm.

I'll see if I can post one of the videos...the car sounds fantastic. Flat six revving to 7500rpm...simply awesome.

I'm set to put the new engine together tomorrow...so hopefully, that will be in tomorrow night ready for our dyno tune on Tuesday.

Far out things are running tight.
