Low Fuel light comes on prematurely?

Yesterday driving home I had just a little under a quarter of a tank (according to the fuel guage, and the low fuel light comes on for a minute and then goes away. Normally it doesn't come on until it's below the last dash. Why come on so early; which one is right?

Usually the guage is the incorrect one, reading too low. When I'm over empty, I still have 2.5 to 3 gallons left. And yes, my light comes on early too.

It's normal for ALL SVXes.

I used to have a Nissan Maxima which had a female voice tell me "Fuel level is low! DING! Fuel Level is low! DING!". Used to drive my wife crazy whenever she borrowed my car and I had let it down to less than 1/4 tank.

So the premature warning light is pretty benign.

Yeah, but this is different; normally it would come on when have about 2-3 gallons left, but I'm guessing I've got about 5 or 6 left now. Driving to and from work today it didn't come on at all.

Chances are your floater/device to measure your gas level was stuck when you hit a bump. It happens once in a blue moon. If it keeps happening, you need to do something about it. Just don't drill through the seats. If this is the only time it happened, don't worry about it.

I had an 85 200SX that did the same thing. "Fuel level is low," "lights are on," "door is open," etc. Drove me nuts!!!
