Angry Clunk/Bang on starting, then nothing

Hey all, long time no see!
My car started with a clunk/bang yesterday, then drove fine. I have a resonator that is toast, so I have a buzzing/clang while driving, and thought it was that. Nope! When I went to have the resonator taken off today, they say the clunk on start up is tranny related. This is a new, 2 year old tranny with the warranty expired 2 months ago!! Going to take it in tomorrow....any ideas of what I can expect?
Thanks, Cyn

Not sure what to expect but if it happened only when you cranked it, you should atleast verify the top starter bolt is there and the bottom nut/stud for the starter are there and both the bolt and the nut are tight. Other than that anything else i believe will lead you deeper down the rabbit hole.

You can also use the inspection hole rear of the intake, pass. side, and rotate the engine looking for missing flywheel teeth.

It would help to know exactly when you heard the noise.... when you first turned the key, or when it turned over.

Re: Clunk/Bang on starting, then nothing

Oh, they also said that when they were under her, there is a bolt just in front of centre (in a sort of cut out square?) that seems to jerk/move up and down when they rev'd her, and that the 2 rear bolts that hold it all up seem to have bushing problems ???
If I could show you, I would!! I know I'm not using the right terms, but maybe someone will know what I'm saying, LOL.

not sure really what you are describing but if you take SoCal's advice and pull the little maintenance inspection cover at the right side (right side as you are sitting in the drivers seat) rear engine where the engine and transmission meet, sounds like maybe they saw a loose bolt from your torque converter to your flex plate, you will want to check all this hardware out. Look in the how too docs to find trans removal or engine removal because it would be in the steps for seperating the trans and engine so those are what you should inspect.

Talking Re: Clunk/Bang on starting, then nothing

Took it back to tranny shop that did the work 2 years ago. For some reason, bolts were loose all over the thing....they went over the whole thing, tightened it up, and I'm good to go!! They were also apologetic over the fact that it was all stuff they had removed and put back.....

Glad you got her sorted Cyn. From the sound of things I'd suspect they tightened up your bolts to a wrong torque figure originally, or possibly even hand tight, a guesstimate.

That's why they were apologetic. The engine chucks a lot of stress on those bolts and they should have been done properly.
