well, after talking to my stepdad about all of this (he's a pretty knowledgeable when it comes to subarus)
he's recommending that i maybe add a little ATF so that the level is a little higher than LOW
and then just leave it alone and see how it all works for me
then if i encounter any more problems, we can start dealing with it again

Re: revving in D

so im starting up this year-old thread to announce that im once again having the same problem

only this time its revving in 3rd (gear selector in 3)

my solution to this last year was driving all the time in "3" instead of "D" which I usually did

but now im kinda back at square one

my experience with it today was around 3 pm when i left school
the car had been running for a good 5-10 min, waiting to get out of the parking lot
but once i got out onto the road and came to my first red light, i push the accelerator when the light turns green and the car started to move VERY slowly, maybe 5 mph tops

in panic mode, because of the oncoming cars behind me i kept hitting the gas but nothing would happen.
thinking maybe another gear would change things i slipped it into 1st and it took off normally

i really cannot speculate as to what the problem might be?
bad tranny?

Re: revving in D

Sounds like you might be running in safe mode. Any power light flashing on start up for a transmission code?

Re: revving in D

no power light flashing on start up

i do have power mode constantly on, but i see this as having no effect on anything related here (i did the power mode mod early fall and havent experienced any problems)

this has just started again now that the subfreezing temps are here

Re: revving in D

Is your svx equipped with an external trans fluid filter?
Do you have an external cooler?
Do you have the original 92 style radiator?
Have you ever cleaned your TPS? (throttle position sensor)

Re: revving in D

Does it rev up and go nowhere or do you just hit the gas with little or no revving and it seems to just crawl?

I ask because if it does not rev up but instead just seems to crawl, that is characteristic of it in safe mode. If it just free revs then it is more than likely internals in the transmission.

Oh i see it took off when put into "1". Try putting it into "2" and see if it drives normally and shifts normally from 1st to 2nd gear. Make sure you turn your power mode off when you do this as it will be easier to diagnose. If it does in fact shift normally into 2nd gear, try putting it into "3" at say 30-35 mph, If it then just revs up at that point, then it is probably the high clutch and you need a rebuild.

Re: revving in D

typically it just revs up and goes nowhere
it was only today that the car seemed to move a bit when i hit the gas (when i was having the issue)

i will try it in 2nd

but i think why im most confused is because it will rev in 3rd, or D, (and i never know when to expect it, except when its a really cold morning and i come to a complete stop)
so ill put it in a lower gear and it will almost always move right away and then i can immediately shift back into 3rd or D and wont experience the problem again.

im at a loss as to why it does it only once, upon my first stop, and then not do it again

Re: revving in D

What is going on w/ the indicator light on the dash when this happens??

BTW the SVX does not have "safe mode" for the transmission

in the winter the trans "cooler" is actually a trans warmer. The single pass rad cooler is meant to act as a thermostat for the transmission to keep it at operating temperature. What kind of outside temps are you seeing??

Tom

there are no dash lights on; at least none that shouldnt be on

this morning the svx read an outside temp of -6 F
but on average (for now at least) its right around 0 degrees F

Re: revving in D

Mabey Tom can answer this. What would happen if his passage through the radiator was partially clogged? I think a combinatiom of that and the really cold thick atf might be causing this.

I am sorry, I was not clear. I was asking about the lights that indicate what gear you are in.

It would effect the overall performance of the trans and would have likely destroyed it by now

Re: revving in D

Did you try letting it get to operating temp? You may want to invest in a remote car starter, at temps that low i woul never drive a cold car. Mabey i'm supersticious but i think it can lead to other problems too. Blown HGs, engine wear etc...
