Question Random honking while driving... security system?

I had this problem pop up about a month ago, and it seems to be happening more and more often now. I'll be driving along, and all of a sudden the horn will honk, randomly. Sometimes it will stop there, other times it will honk again a few moments later. Sometimes its a short honk, sometimes its a little longer. When it happened last week, I had an issue with the factory key fob working right after this happened. Since then the key fob has worked on and off intermittently. The battery in the fob is new as of this spring, so I don't think it needs to be replaced yet.

I did some searching, and couldn't come up with anything. Anyone else ever had this issue before? I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the security module? I think for now my plan of action will be to turn off the factory alarm system and see if the problem goes away, but I'm hoping someone here has a more specific answer on what could be wrong.

Oh and the car is a '97 LSi if it makes any difference.

I would surmise that you are correct but not sure what is going on with it.

Re: Random honking while driving... security system?

Mine likes to do weird things when the battery gets low. For some reason if I have the headlights on, the fan on high, and the AC on, the battery won't charge if it's at idle, and since my battery is crap, after a while the clock starts to dim out and then the alarm starts going off.

I'm sure this must be frustrating. I don't have a helpful suggestion at this time but I can point you to this to make you feel better:

LOL That's exactly what keeps happening! I'm sick of pissing people off at stop signs! I never thought of the sports thing, last time it happened with someone in front of me I just started looking behind me with my hands in the air as if it was the car behind me.

I forgot to turn off the security button when I drove it today, but it didn't do it so next time it does then I will turn the switch off. And as for the battery/idle thing, it doesn't just do it at idle, it really is totally random. Happens when at idle, when cruising at 50 mph, when cruising at 70 mph, even once while accelerating. I can't seem to find any pattern to it or anything, and it's not caused by vibration/bumps in the road either. The only thing I do know is that every time it has happened, the car was fully warmed up and driven for at least 10 minutes.

When I get a chance, I'll get under the hood and start inspecting all of the horn wiring too.

Re: Random honking while driving... security system?

Zombie thread resurrection!

Years later, I finally solved this issue! I actually resorted to unplugging my horn during the summer months because this only happened during warm weather. I recently noticed my parking lights randomly coming on, and one day after my commute home they were stuck on. I unplugged the security module and they went out. Ended up replacing the module and reconnected the horn and all is good now. Turns out it was the security module, just like I had apparently suspected many years ago.

Shoulda done that years ago!

Just wanted to conclude this thread in case anybody has a similar issue and ends up coming across this thread.

Great to hear you fixed it. Even better you came back to post your solution.

I have to admit that it took me a while to find this thread, but I knew I had started one...just didn't realize it was that long ago.

Re: Random honking while driving... security system?

this happened to mine and ended up being the alternator. occasionally would have too much ac ripple and screw up the alarm. three bad new alternators later then was not an issue. i had to drive my lowered volvo 740 to the parts store in a foot of snow to return an alternator i had just bought the day before. if you keep having problems i would check your alternator.

Replacement was from a local junkyard car (the one and only time my local yard had an SVX, many years ago). I wasn't expecting a junkyard module to be good but I guess I got lucky!
