Does anyone do or has anyone done inspections? Brake question.

Front brake rattle. Pins possibly worn or loose. Is there an immediate safety issue involved with this? As in, would the car not pass inspection? I can replace them NEXT weekend, but I need a sticker THIS weekend.

The reason I'm asking is that I have to replace the pads for a sticker, which i can do, but I'm not sure which of the pins it is, or if it's even the pins, or the calipers that are the source of the problem. I won't have enough time to diagnose and replace in time for my trip to the mechanic for a sticker and I don't want to purchase all the possible parts and send the ones I don't need back, as funds are limited. Would I be failed for it or do they even look for that kind of thing?

The pins are most likely not worn as they are only guides for the caliper which floats on them.

Usually the problem is the anti rattle clips and are not a safety issue as they only keep the pads from rattling around on the caliper.

Try lightly touching the pedal when it's rattling - if it stops, then that's what it is.

Should pass inspection fine if that's all that's wrong. - Ed

The bushings that the pins slide back and forth in can wear if the bellows on the shaft isn't sealing well.

Keith

It is correct that this would not effect getting "the sticker"

Pins and or bushings . My Claret is doing it badly, stops when you touch the pedal. I can actually move the right front caliper on the pins by hand.
I just replaced the calipers and discs on my Ebony and it's silent.
It should pass with the new pads as the rattle is not a safety issue as such but could become one in the future if left.

Thanks chaps. It does go away completely with just a bit of brake pressure. Good to hear then. I'm pretty sure it'll pass with flying colors and funny windows.
