"Other" High Milage Achievements

1965 Volvo P1800 - 2,500,000

On his way to 3,000,000

Tom, Eric, and I were talking about high milage last night, and this came to mind. In the late 80's my mother showed me an article in the paper about someone going a million miles in their volvo, which excited her as she was a volvo enthusiast. I looked it up a few years ago and found he hit the 2mil mark, and on his way to the 2.5mil mark. Here's a couple articles about it.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, scotch in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA !!!!!

It's been repainted about 15 times, every 2-3 years, to a different color, blue, orange, green, brown, tan, electric blue, etc until now that red. I think it started orangeish.

I think the highest mileage I've ever seen was a 91 Toyota Previa with 408k on the odo (Engine was replaced @ just over 400k due to about a $300 difference in a new engine vs. resealing the old one)

I'd imagine the odometer on the Volvo rolled over after 100,000? or does it go all the way to 999,999?

I think being that old, probably rolled over at 100k, I haven't seen anything pre like, 1980, with an odometer that read past 100k... Buddy of mine had a 79 Subaru wagon that supposedly had over 500k on it, but the odo only went to 99,999.9 (Otherwise it'd be at the top of the Subaru High Mileage Club)

Highest mileage 'car' I own is my 61 Ford convertable. It was 'closing fast' on 100K when I bought it in 1972. It has just a whiskers width under 300 K now, 35 years later.

The highest mileage TRUCK is my 1978 Ford F-350 tow truck. It has just over 1,000,000 miles! It was a mere pup at 900K when I bought it.

It was used by a Baltimore towing company till it had a 'documented' 500K, when My buddy bought it and rebuilt it for over the road transports.
He put 400K on it while it was in his stable, then I bought it and slammed another 100K on it 'locally'!

The only thing left that came on the truck 'as new', is the BED and FRAME rails! It has had 2 cabs, 5 front clips, 5 engines, 3 rear ends, 9 transmissions, 2 sets of springs and about 25 paint jobs! C'MON!! I KNOW that cars that get used get used UP!

I also have a 66 Dodge 4 door that has 268K, Engines, 3. Transmissions 4, Quarter pannels and trunk floors 3, interiors 2, etc, etc.

We have a 'fleet' of vans that run all day,6 days a week, with 2 shifts of drivers hammering on the same vehicles.
We SELDOM get much more than 300 K out of them without spending THOUSANDS of dollars on maintenance and repairs, with the BIG problem being metal fatigue and rust.

I'd have to see PROOF that a car can live that long and go that far, even WITH new paint every couple years!

This is a hatchet that George Washington gave my great great great Grandfather, It has only had 5 new heads and 15 handles......
