Rear fog light?

Was there ever a rear fog light on any SVX?

Mine has been inspected annually for 17 years in Finland..... and now I ran into a problem with this. Every vehicle first registered after January the 1st, 1993 is supposed to have one. Mine was manufactured in January 1992, but was not registered in the States until June 1993 and imported to Finland after that.

Now I need to install one..... I looked at other SVXs here and none has an external add on (like many imports do)... so either they do not have one or they have one in the rear panel from the factory.

I also need to wire a switch wich has a warning light in it... oh well.

Any suggestions?

Tapani

Re: Rear fog light?

US cars and JDM models did not come with high intensity red rear fog lights, UK/European models did, JDM cars that are regiistered here have to be adapted, fit a switch run some wire and convert one of the rear running lights (fit a 21w bulb) no need to fit extra lenses, so when lights are off it still looks factory fit

Or you could fit a UK/European rear light bar , which has 2 red fog lenses and 2 white reversing lenses. I have one for sale if you want it.

Hiya,

I have converted my drivers side reverse light with a 21w red bulb, keeps everything looking normal and you still have the use of all the original lights.

It passes MOT and ESVA in the UK so should not be a problem for you either.
It has reminded me to sort an LED to replace the bulb as they can go pinkish after a while.

PM sent.

How are these wired? Possibly already in the harness...??

I saw a few switch bars for sale in the German e-bay, but non had a switch for these.... they are required to have a separate (from the front) switch.

If I install the EURO light bar I will lose two tail lights (the USM has four), correct?

which rear bar do you have ? the US spec or JDM spec
US

JDM/AUST

mine is the JDM/AUST one and i just wired up the red ones on the centre bar for extra brake lights , it shouldnt be too hard to wire up some to use for fogs

Re: Rear fog light?

Hi,

The second pic of the Italian registered car tagged as JDM is not the same as a JDM.

The JDM is virtaully the same as the US with the extra tail/brake lights and inner reverse lights.

In the UK/Europe converting the brake/tail lights (as a pair) does not conform with ESVA regs so would technically fail an MOT or country safety test.

The easiest way is to convert one of the rear reverse lamps to a 21w red bulb or LED (RHD drivers side in the UK, LHD drivers side in Europe)

Darren.

No. There is just a blank plate behind the foglight lens.

Re: Rear fog light?

I had one of the euro tail bars with the rear fog lights on a previous SVX. I wired them to come on with the front fog lights.

Re: Rear fog light?

Thanks guys,

If I install the euro light bar I will lose the inner pair of rear / brake lights.

Also, here the rear fog lights must have a separate illuminated switch and the headlights must be on for these to switch on. Further, if I disconnect the front fog lights they must be blanked. All lights installed must be in a working condition.

Does anyone have a EURO wiring diagram?

Oh well,

Tapani

Re: Rear fog light?

Tapani,

The euro did not have the inner brake/tail lamps.

If you go down the route of trying to convert yours to fog lights you may well find they will not pass your test.

In the UK we need a seperate amber switch for the rear fogs althought this can either be on the lighting circuit or powered when the front fogs are on, I would double check if you can do the second as it's ESVA compliant so should be adopted anywhere in in Europe.

I have been importing cars from Japan since 1999 and never had a problem with ESVA or MOT when converting one of the reverse lamps to a red foglamp, it is simple and does not show unless it's turned on or you look very hard to see a red bulb/LED

Darren.

Re: Rear fog light?

As already pointed out by others, you will loose one pair of brake lights, if you replace the light panel of the trunk lid by a European one (which I did) to get the right fog light design. Then, your warning light will come on every time you press the brake pedal. So you would need to get the corresponding swich/relay for the European Model, too. Or you insert resistors instead of the two bulps instead.

Re: Rear fog light?

Hey Tapani, since you have USDM I assume you also have front fog lights. Someone here told me EUDM cars don't have this because it's against regulations to have the foglights over a certain point or in the same bar as the other lights. Make sure they don't bust you on this, too!

Meanwhile, for us who have two taillights and fog lights in the rear, would it be feasable to install LEDs in the tail- and foglights bays and have them work as

a) USDM-like tail-ligts
b) Inner pair as fog lights when fog-light switch is on

?

I would think it would be a few relays and something to adjust the intensity of the inner pair (which would be more intense as fog lights)?

This is true, but the catch is: My car was imported by a private person when he moved back home from Indiana. These cars are treated a bit differently than "regular" used imports.... all other lighting can remain as per DOT - but the rear fog light must be added.

Oh well....
