Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

Inserted alternate sensor.. car started... I also picked up a rear wiper assembly as mine had frozen (rusted) stopped

You know how to tell what the hottest day of the year is in Salt Lake? Check to see if Mitch is working on his car in the sun...... then correlate the date.... you see it agrees.

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

Did you clear the codes after you changed the sensor?

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

They wouldn't clear. Tried it twice. Get the same codes each time.
Also had the battery out while I did the replacement. about 8 hours.

The car starts...that's what is confusing me.

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

Unplug battery for like 10 mins to clear the codes. The regular way almost never works.

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

I left the battery unplugged all night. Now...I'm afraid to go out and see if she starts..

Between my 32 year old motorcycle, my 20 year old SVX and my 150cc Chinese motor scooter I don't get a break between breakdowns

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

Started the car this morning after not starting it all day yesterday. Started up-no CEL... which is odd.... I'm pretty sure the EGR solenoid is still bad. As they used to say in the Newspapers (do they still print newspapers?)

Watch this space.

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

Interesting development. I've now lost the crank sensor..... (code 11) also recurring Cam angle sensor (code 13) making me wonder if it's an age thing with the magnets in them. At any rate, the car won't start. And I guess I'll be ordering new ones rather than try to swap them with wrecking yard parts. Also still throwing the EGR solenoid code (34) I can't imagine that's causing a major problem...but then what the F*** do I know ...

I'll be back when the sensors get here....

Be sure to check the wiring. A lot of heat cycling causes them to get extremely brittle.

Also, pull the sensors and make sure there is no debris stuck to them.

All depends which code it is throwing... Some will immediately set off the light, some will after a couple miles, and some will after a few "drive cycles". Just depends what it is and what's causing it.

Re: Some Troubleshooting help please

ok...replaced the crank sensor...nothing... cleared codes ...tried to start the car but i'm still getting the 11 code (no signal from crank sensor for 3 sec after start switch on) that's the only code right now.

Question: looking at the old sensors both the cam and the crank there is some denting on the bottom. Could the part that the sensor senses have come off?

I'll check the wires again... and get a continuity check to see if the wires are good...in the mean time.... I'm still open to suggestions.

Seems that there is almost definitely an issue with the wiring if you have tried replacing it with a known good sensor. If the bottom is dented in some way, it is likely to change the magnetic field and how it is reading.

is there any test for the crank and cam sensor? the wiring seems to be ok...I've checked them for continuity. Short of ordering new sensors... at a retail cost of about half of what the car would sell for on a good day.

Harvey would know best if they can be physically tested. I seem to recall that they can't be.
One option you could try is swapping the cam sensor and the crank sensor that is identical. Clear the codes and if the code stays teh same, you can rule wiring the fault. If the code switches, then it's the sensor. Then either buy a new sensor, or you could always buy a used one for a fraction of the price. It's not often that they fail, but it does happen from time to time.

Perhaps post a picture of how badly "dented" the sensor is. It's almost impossible for the sensor pickup to be affected. For the cam sensor, it is just a slightly raised notch on the cam gear. For the crank pickup, there are teeth on the crank sprocket.
