Resonator=glasspak?
I'm getting ready to replace my stock muffler w/ a sweet magnaflow.
while under the car last eve, figuring out location and such, i was scoping the resonator. Is it basically a glasspack to knock down some exhaust tone? Since it appears to be, any glasspacks better than others? cherrybomb, etc, blah blah blah? I ask becuz i plan on building headers, dual to where the resonator is now, then single pipe to muffler. so if the res is a glasspak should i run 2 of them in dual section or run a single pak after merge? i'm leaning toward a single, 1/2 the weight But just doin the muffler for now. Workin on figuring out supplies for the rest of the exhaust job.

Re: Resonator=glasspak?
From what I've read, the larger the resonator, the deeper the exhaust note will be. To me that means when I do mine I will stick the longest one I can fit under there. There is also a resonator out there with spiral baffles rather than 'glass. This sounds like the best choice for longevity, since the fiberglass packing will eventually blow/burn out.

One with spiral baffels, will increase the turbulance and decrease the air flow. A resonator with a perforated core will allow an almost unrestricted flow, almost with no reguard to length. A good quality one, from say Magnaflow, will last for years. Tom

There are many theories as to it's function. It does slightly reduce exhaust noise, but there is also thought that it acts as an expansion chamber to help with high rpm flow. According to Harvey it is directly affected by resonant waves, and is specificly tuned for proper length, size, and distance from the exhaust manifold. While nothing has been proven on a dyno, it is thought that messing with this "resonator", or secondary muffler can have a slightly noticeable effect on the power curve.
I think to answer your question, it isn't simply some glasspack they threw on to make it more quiet. Trust me, I've removed mine and the primary muffler does a fantastic job for keeping the noise down. I've replaced it with a pretty standard resonator with about the same volume.

Re: Resonator=glasspak?
Everything I've read about the spiral flow says they are less restrictive than straight through designs and that they reduce backpressure. I'll admit this does not seem logical, but that is their claim. Moroso Spiral Flow and Flo Pro Twister are the spiral flow designs, btw. Anybody have any experience with these?
