What about that AC... stupid vents!
So when I resealed my valve covers, we cracked the ac line open, to move the hose out of the way. So after that, we recharged the ac, and it worked fine for about 15 minutes. Then it stopped working. The ac unit would kick on for about a second for every 20 seconds or so, and the air wasnt getting cold. Since then Ive thought that it leaked out where the retrofit nozzle was placed, but today I see different. I went and bought a small can of the recharge, and when I hooked up the meter, it shot way up past the middle of the red section (in other words, the section that says caution levels) Which by the way, when we charged it up the first time, it wasnt even in the middle of the good section, it was on the lower end saying to put more in. So I instantly took off the bottle, and poked at the nozzle tip to start letting the freon out. For a good 15 seconds, only hot air came out. Then my ac compressor kicked on and stayed on and the air comming out turned to white foam. So now I am at the conclusion that my ac didnt work before, because it had too much freon in the system.
So now, it works, and its cold, though not as cold as I wish it was. Only now here is my problem. Isnt the AC supposed to come out of the vents? Im not getting any air through them, even on the vent mode. Its going to the floor and to the defrost. It was comming out of the vents when I got it working again, then I drove and messed with the settings trying to get it on my feet, and then it wouldnt come out of the vents again. So what is the deal now? If I was to say that there was one thing I dont like about the SVX, is that you cant control what air comes out of the vents, or at you feet. This is very annoying... Any help would be appreciated.

Re: What about that AC... stupid vents!
Dang, 33 views and not one answer
BTW: Something else to rant about. I got freon everywhere when i let the pressure out of the system. So my perfectly clean engine, is no longer clean, and it is smoking like CRAZY burning it all off... it better do it fast.

So your AC will blow cold air now? Low side pressure should be between 20 and 40 psi, and the high side will be somewhere between 120 and 200 with the system running. The gauges that come with those do-it-yourself kits usually only read the low side pressure. Autozone sells a home mechanic set of manifold gauges for ~$50 or so. Sounds to me like you have a problem with the climate control head, that controls the different mode doors in order to direct the air around. There is a self diagnosis function built into the control unit. Details are in the below PDFs:

Re: What about that AC... stupid vents!
Maybe the lever that connects the vent to the control became disconnected. reach under the dash with the air conditioner running, looking up just above the accelerator and see if you have a lose control arm and maybe you can move it back and forth to see what is going on with it.
Hope you didn't lose too much of the oil out of the compressor Keith Last edited by kwren; 06-30-2008 at 12:35 AM. Reason: didn't even understand it myself the first time LOL |

Re: What about that AC... stupid vents!
Yes the ac is blowing cold now. It was a 95deg day here, and the inside of my car was nice and cold. What happens if you lose too much oil? How do you know if you lose too much oil?

Re: What about that AC... stupid vents!
Well I looked under there today and just touched the control arm, and it instantly moved to the other side, and the AC came out of the vents. Maybe it just got stuck or something, I dunno. But its working now. Thanks for the tip. Now if only my heat would come out of the vents on cold days, I would like that, lol.

Re: What about that AC... stupid vents!
Subaru set it up up heat wouldn't come out the vents. The reason....it's drying to the driver's eyes. If you search around, there was a thread where someone altered it to get heat out the vents in winter.
