Unhappy Stupidity strikes me again.

Today I messed up one of my lug bolts trying to screw on the wrong size lug. I could tell right away they didn't fit, but I saw the threads had paint on them and was thinking the tightness was just from that paint overspray. I decide to give it a few turns and see if it loosened, ..mistake!

Back to the computer to double check the size and sure enough I had the wrong size. Anyhow after getting the correct size lug nuts, the new one will not tighten all the way in on the that one bolt, so it looks like I need to have it replaced.

Is safe to drive around for a week or so with 4 tight ones on the left front wheel until I can have it replaced? I am not having a good week.

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

Go to a hardware store and get a die of the proper size (12x1.5??)) and clean up the threads.

This kit from Horrible Freight has the 12x1.5. I probably wouldn't trust it to thread a rod, but it should clean up the threads well enough.

I would drive as little as possible with 4 lugs.

Oh and just to make you even better, when I did a quick search to confirm the thread size I found it in a post that you made

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

I drove an SVX for 2 years with only 4 lugs on the right front wheel.

Should you do it? No. Will it probably be OK? Yes.

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

Oh by the way, not that you have not seen this combo (Letitsnow's SVX for example) but here are the new wheels. I have to say they are flashy, and are very attention getting. ..and as a bonus they match my Outback AWD badge.

I when had the set of silver BBS on it I thought they were too light. I will likely keep these goldies for season or two then probably have them redone in a metallic gray.

I'll be taking it to the shop this week to have it done unless I can talk someone into helping me. I may need a new lug nut too I'm thinking.

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

Get a die. It doesn't look like the kit I posted has 12x1.25. But one of their cheap kits does, I own it and have used it on my lug threads. If you can't find one at HF, you can probably get the proper die at a hardware store or a good auto parts store like Napa.

That die is a good one to have, anytime one of my lugs seems to bind, I run that over it quick and it's good as new. If you're worried about the nut get the matching tap.

Since you're just fixing threads it isn't important to have the proper handle, just use a socket/adjustable wrench/vise grips to spin it after you put a little oil on the threads.

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

The lug studs are not too hard to change, I would see how bad the threads are maybe run over it with the die as mentioned. I would certainly check out that lug nut as if the threads are messed up in there it will screw up the new, or refinished lug stud.
I changed one stud on my RF and 2 on my RR. Tire shop messed up on a friday afternoon and I wanted it done sat and no one could so I did it myself, made them replace the lug nuts and since they couldnt be got any more got an entire set still they got off lightly.
I did not need to remove the hub just worked out the studs and angled them and turned the hub till the larger hole lined up. patience was key.

Re: Stupidity strikes me again.

Yay!! it's fixed. I was able to have a friend help me and we got it replaced. The lug stud and lug nut were completely beyond repair. Ordered a punch and die anyway, they were cheap and it seemed like it will be useful.

I could use a few more stock lugs though, I destroyed a few during the repair.

Fun173 thanks! I was pretty uncertain about whether I would like the color on a silver or not. But it turns out I like them a lot (and they look great on your red one too).
