Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
Hello all,
I'm about to start putting the pulleys and timing belt back on tomorrow, and I was looking for any advice/pictures/etc on making the crankshaft tool. I'm guessing that I need to manufacture something out of flat stock and some bolts, but I'm looking for some guidance. Thanks in advance. Clarke |

Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
It's a 3/4 inch hole (i think) with 4 holes around it. 3" between each stud, going across.
...........1 .........2..3 ...........4 So, if that where the stud layout, there is 3 inches between 1 and 4, and 2 and 3. They cross at exactly half way, which is where the 5th hole (for the extension) fits. Just big enough for the extension to fit, so the socket must be preloaded onto the crank bolt, then install tool, then attach torque wrench, and BAM! I used 3" grade 8, 5/16th diameter bolts.

Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
Thanks Cam, you have been VERY helpful these past two weeks!
So is this the procedure: 1) slide pulley on shaft 2) thread bolt on finger tight 3) install socket 4) attach extension 5) attach tool into pulley holes 6) attach torque wrench to extension 7) hold pulley tool still 8) torque bolt to spec (something like 90 ft/lb, I think) Sound right? Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
Is it possible to purchase the official tool from Subaru?
If so, it might be worth exploring a rental service for it. I've done it with the Airbag reset tool for BMW's. It's a tool that is rarely used, but costs about $200. I "rent" it for $220 and when it is returned I return the $200 deposit. It ends up costing the end user $20 + return shipping costs. Since I pay for shipping + Insurance of the device, I don't really end up making much money, but that's not really the point. So, Cam... Are you interested in "renting" your tool so we don't have to fab something up every time? Last edited by clarkerussell; 03-08-2011 at 08:50 AM. |

Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
I'd rather the tool doesn't leave my house, to be honest.
I tried my local subaru dealer about a year ago on some tools, and they told me that they don't usually supply them to customers. I said that I would be willing to deal with their tool vendor directly, but they declined to give me the information. They called me back saying a wrist pin puller and circlip pliers would cost a few hundred a piece or some crazy amount. So I went to harbor freight and spent 30 bucks on tools to modify and make work. Mission accomplished. The point I am trying to make is that there is often a tool or materials readily available if you have a little ingenuity to spare. As far as renting a tool, I am not sure if there is a place that would do it. I tried MAC tools, MATCO, and Snap-on. No one had something that would work without guess and check. It would be easiest to just make one. Then you have it forever. EDIT: someone found a crank pulley tool for a ?legacy? a while back on ebay. Haven't ran across an SVX one yet.

Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
I may be late to this thread but the way I removed crankshaft pulleys is to stop the flexplate from turning. You can see the teeth of the flexplate through the inspection hole near the top of the bellhousing. Usually, I have a helper stick a large flat head screwdriver into one of the tooth and have it rest against the side of the inspection hole while I turn the crankshaft bolt. Pretty simple I think.

I just woke up a bit ago, but are we talking about removing a crankshaft pulley, a camshaft pulley or a crankshaft pulley bolt

A big boxend wrench and a mauler work pretty good as well but you need a big HD wrench Keith |

Re: Any pictures/diagrams for a homemade crankshaft pulley tool?
I can't claim that trick - I learned it on here too. Not sure who was the originator, but it sounds like something Huck would do.
