Whats up with that windshield?

Its almost like mine has thousands of tiny chips in it.... Ive never seen anything like it before. It doesnt come off, and I can pretty much feel that they are physical chips in the glass. These things are covering the windshield, I mean every inch. Literally thousands of them. It makes it look like theres sprinkles of rain on it all the time. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Its so strange... Its not cracked or anything.

Also, if no one gains any interest in my 92, and i keep it to pull parts from... how odd would it look to have a blue windshield with the rest of the windows bronze? Theres no way I could afford a new one....

Your hood and roof should be identical in complexion. I even have chips in my spoiler.

This is just what happens to very old, very low cars.

My windsheild is also new, bronze colored, with the other glass being blue. It doesn't stand out unless you are really paying attention, and when you see it it's ok because it is complimented by my license plate and wheels.
I'm gonna go with " it will look weird" on your car because I tend to notice such things.

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

The hood is, as are the headlights... I can fix those, but is the only way to fix the window, by actually replacing it?

You could technically "repair" it with resin, but that would require micro-precision and way too much time. Do you have a powerful magnification tool and very tiny hands?

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

Lol I think that would be out of the question. I think it would be insane to even try to do that.

Same thing happened to mine over the summer, thanks to a hail storm. Was fine beforehand.

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

If you tint the windows, you wont be able to tell the difference.
If you do replace the glass, make sure you try and save the moulding.
You can get aftermarket glass for around $300 but it doesnt come with moulding.

My ebony has a bronze windshield and blue glass on the rest of the windows. It is normally not too noticable. But you can see the difference in this pic:

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

The only way to remedy a windshield that has been damaged in such a way is to replace it. Small pits from sand, hail, etc are not generally fixable to where they would become any less noticeable.

I work with a glass company and I see this on a regular basis.

That's an interesting thing to know. With English cars the Ebony ones come with the bronze glass all round. I have never seen one that has blue glass.

Although I like Ebony cars I don't really like the bronze tint. It is not dark enough, it's almost a non-tint.

Silver UK cars and JDM cars all come with the blue tint. My JDM Claret had green tint, but that darker colour did not seem to make it to any other market except Japan, SFAIK.

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

My 92 JDM Ebony has the green tint.

Now my 96 Polo has the bronze windows and the windshield was replace with a green tint one. Most of the time it looks good and not noticable, however, in the right light it stands out like the Ebony in the picture above.

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

Hmm, crazy. I never really even noticed there were differences.

Whoever had the car before me tinted the windows, but you can definitely tell that mine are the bronze ones.

Re: Whats up with that windshield?

I just got a used winshield installed into my Laguna, and it also has the micro pits all over it, but I only paid $100 for the thing and another $100 for the swap from the pats car to mine. I've had windshields like that before, but that's when I lived in Colorado. (I can attest to Shelfy's comment.) Just before I bought my Laguna, I replaced the Colorado-cracked-&-speckled windshield in my claret w/a blue tinted one. As Wannarace928 says, it's not too noticable - but I prefer the way the world looks through the bronze glass! I would have put a bronze windshield in my Laguna if I wasn't bargain hunting. (I ended up with a matching blue one.) I figure I could have integrated the 2 glass colors by swapping all 4 inset side windows between my 2 cars.

I was also wondering if there was a fix for the pitting. Obviously, filling each individually would be impossible. But what is there's some process where they just coat the whole windshield with some kind of sealant, in effect resurfacing the thing? I guess the windshield would have to be positioned horizontally for that so it wouldn't all slide to the bottom before it solidified. That would require removing the windshield or jacking up the front of the car only at a sharp angle. And even if it was horizontal, the stuff would probably still slide off the curved surface! But I'm sure someone would have already mentioned such a thing if it existed and was affordable!
