Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
I don't know of anyone on here that has done anything like that. But I can give you some info that will help you along the way.
Mine was also a FWD. I had TomSVX help me out with converting it to a 6-speed AWD. It is mostly the same as converting the Auto to stick with a few minor extras. Your rear subframe will need to be swapped out with one from and AWD. Your FWD doesnt have all the mounting points for the rear diff. and you'll need rear safts and a drive shaft. The STi rears will work with your factor rear hubs and a stock AWD SVX drive shaft will work with the 6-speed. As far as RWD goes, the 6-speed STi tranny will need to be modified. Look at the STi drifters. I beleive Rhys Millen's company RMRProducts built STi's and the EVO's. Going RWD I would devenitly go with the 6-speed over the 5-speed, because of the strength. TomSVX can also give you alot of info. He has done quite a few 5-speed and 6-speed conversions. |

Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
Don't plan on it less you can source some large rear parts. You'll need a stronger driveshaft, a strong rear (skyline is preferred. Easy to find since a lot of 240 owners swap those rears in too, but the fab work is a lot to mount it), and axles. You're basically first converting to awd, and then to rwd. You'll be sending all, rather than half, of the power to the rear axles, so you'll have to effectivly do the same mods as an STI would need if it made double the hp.

Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
I'm just curious why you would want to downgrade from 4WD to RWD? You want less traction?

Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
RWD>AWD. More fun, and in the dry, more traction (except of the line) than AWD. Of course, a RWD conversion has quite a few things that would be unpredictable until you actually experimented after the swap, since the suspension layout and various beams/bars are all made for an AWD car.

Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
I would put my money on our drive shafts going way before the R180 goes...
imho... converting to 100% RWD is not worth it with our cars... as Omar pointed it out.... you are pretty much converting to AWD then to RWD... cost effectiveness vs rewards of such a move are... slim to say the least. I would get a DCCD controller for the 6spd if I were you.... -Sov13t.

Re: 5/6mt and rw drive ?s
First, you'll need to convert from FWD to AWD. To do that, you'll need the whole rear subframe, wheel hubs, a driveshaft, awd tranny, and i believe gas tank. $$$. Then, you'll need to lock the center diff, and disconnect the front diff. Time + money. Want to turbo? Drop your engine. It's easier. Check to make sure your engine can handle low boost turbo, ~9-12psi. Check compression, seals, rings, gaskets, etc. Then, fab up some fancy intake and exhaust to accomidate the turbo. Run oil lines, etc. Tom sells a sweet kit for 5/6speed swap that makes it a ton easier. Many users highly reccomend it.
Then, make your way to your local McD's, do a smoky burnout as the cop turns hte corner, pulls you over, arrests you, confiscates your car, and uses it in "demonstrations" when they show little kids how drinking and driving can cause accidents. Also, be sure to turn your head to 120* off center from your head. It shows how serious you are.
