I have a donor '92 motor for my '97

I bought a complete '92 car this weekend and towed it home (500 miles) so I can replace the motor in my '97 that has spun crankshaft bearings. These are are my 1st and 2nd SVX's, the '97 was bought in June. I'm hoping that this doesn't become a habit... ;-)

Anyway, is there any advice you can give me to pass on to my mechanic so I'm sure he gets this transplant sorted out OK?

For example, he thinks the different engine monitoring systems in the '92 will be a problem. Earlier advice from here basically said to plug and play. Is it really that simple?

at most you will need to swap intake manifolds and a couple sensors on the block. *IF* you need to. Which is all about getting the electronics your ECU expects, and not mechanical issues.

engine mounts should swap across blocks without issue.

Some others will chime in with specifics, but I know for sure that the engines themselves are the same. There may be some electronic bits that need to be swapped, but the mechanical stuff is the same.

Nothing needs to be swapped. The only issue that could ever be run into is a Cali spec car that the ECU looks for the EGR temp sensor, so swapping in a non Cali spec engine will throw a code for that unless the ECU is swapped or the temp sensor is swapped.
Other than that, the added 3rd o2 sensor is part of the body/dash harness.

The PO told me that the '92 is a US car, so can I tell from the VIN is it's Cali spec?

Just look for the EGR temp sensor located on the very back of the intake manifold on the passenger side. There will be a couple wires and a connector sticking up if it is, and just a plain bolt in there if it's a Federal emission car.
Basically sitting right on top of where the EGR pipe enters the intake manifold.
