Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

Hum. I will attempt to run the car with the yellow wire grounded tonight. I imagine this will verify the state of the pump. I may need help locating the earth end of the grounding wire.

Yes Nik, the pump should run with the yellow wire grounded.
I have seen a pict of the pumps modulator on this site, somewhere.
Still can't post a pict.

Harvey.

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

Car is running. Engine seems a bit wobbly but I think it's running on all 6.

Will continue diagnosis but I think I've got the problem narrowed down. Thanks for all the halp! :D

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

Well that didn't last very long. Ran for a few miles, turned it off, now it will not start again. Sounds like the fuel pump gave out. It's not growling anymore. ):

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

So I have been scouring the site, there is not any real advice on the Walbro install (nor is there a simple fp how-to).
It's the same as a regular fp install except for this one minor detail of wires and bracket modification?

Can someone break down exactly what I should expect? How the heck do I reattach the wires without soldering or heat wrap? Why does the bracket need to be modified, and with what?

So far some tools I have unexpectedly used to open the fuel tank are: a hammer, pliers, flat head screwdriver used as a chisel and a harness pry, a razor to cut a very stubborn hose, and a vacuum.

Immediately I understood why a member previously indicated the inside to be "a mess".
Stories of the presence of fumes are a bit... exaggerated.

Pump is now out.

"and a vacuum"
I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that you did not use a vacuum cleaner or shop vac to remove vapors...

You know, spinning motor, electricity, sparks and junk.

Lol, no, just the dirt that crumbled away from chiseling at the screw-able cap to make it turn. I didn't want that crap to fall in the tank. Also I found some bits of glass behind the interior panels from that one time.

Walbro is on, but I need a new piece of hose so I haven't turned anything back on yet. That front most one was particularly stubborn at every end. Didn't seem to want to budge.

In all it was very difficult, but only because I didn't know what to expect. I'd say overall the difficulty level is a 4/10. 3/10 if you are lucky enough to be able to move the cap by hand or remove hoses without prying at them with a screwdriver.

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

How did you hook up the Walbro electrically, inside the tank?

I am asking because some electrical insulators dissolve in alcohol.

What YT and I do is to cover the two wires inside of the tank with separate lengths of alcohol approved fuel line, just to be safe.

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

I may do that later. Right now what I have is what I consider to be a ****ty crimping job.

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

Went to Napa, got some fuel hose, guy at the counter said he didn't have any fuel-rated shrink tubing. Meh.

Car is running. I'm going to go for a test drive.

I think what this will prove is that the fuel pump can fail at only 127k miles, and before any other related components. I plugged the modulator harness back to its normal location, no "mod" wire.

Looks like that was the ticket after all.

Went to the car wash, had a scary moment when I thought it was going to stall at a light, but I think it just needs a tune up somewhere.

Just for good measure I turned it off and on again in front of my garage this time. Started right back up, seems to be running normally aside from an occasional pop from the exhaust.

Re: Extreme power loss, random stuttering.

Another thing that both YT and I do is stagger the connections.
When they are evenly spaced like yours, then IF the coating on the crimp connection fails, at least they are not side by side.

Yes, I looked at this picture and came to the same realization.

I do intend to solder it later, though. I'm not a fan of the crimp setup.

BTW Files, my man, we got to seriously talk about struts and top mounts. I'm ready to drop a load of cash for it right now.

Driving around without interior panels and the trunk open, with the fp access open really made me realize how bad the mounts are.
