4.44 tranny project
I think I've got an early 1998 Outback tranny. Searched part lists and come up with two trans codes for '98 & '99 on parts list: mine TZ102Z2DBA - KF and TZ1AZJEBA. Sometimes mine comes up as 1999 2.5L Outback/SUS. Looked for external filter on driver's side and didn't see any. Could it have been taken off? Is there a way to tell if it had one?
Next, if I'm good to go, will need to get a torque converter. I'm told SVX's is a lot different from Legacy; 23 splines vs. 22 and some other differences. The one in my SVX is probably shot, so should I go for a reman SVX or Outback (to match the tranny)? I got a brand new rear diff., what is best option grind case on outback diff and add LSD from SVX or swap ring gear from outback into SVX? Thanks Last edited by 4cfSVX; 06-20-2006 at 12:58 PM. |

Easiest way to tell if the tranny will work...
...is to check whether it has a brake band adjuster. Highlighted in blue in the pic below:
If it has a brake band, it'll be compatible with the SVX TCU. If not, you need a different trans.

Update
Just confirmed. No external filter and has brake band
My mechanic recommends getting reman SVX torque converter. Think I can find one for $300 |

TC size & input splines
Was talking to a transmission specialist, who told me that the SVX TC has 23 input splines and the Outback has 22; and the SVX is larger. So, it seems that SVX TC is the only option without replacing the shaft. He is pretty sure that it was the carrier that went and usually the TC is not contaminated. We'll see.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. |

update - rear diff
Got the lsd from SVX into rear diff without grinding. Why replace the side plates with ones from SVX? everything seems to work with the ones that came with it? What is the potential problem?

The outer races on the SVX sideplates match the tapered roller bearings on the LSD. You might have too much or too little clearance for your differential resulting in damage. Damian

Update: new member of 4.44 Club
It's done and I love it. Its not as smooth from 1st to 2nd as the original. But, I love the quickness off the start. Bump to all who helped. You are the greatest.
