Hi everyone! I have been a member for a couple of months now and I never checked in here...so here I am. My name is Amy and I bought a 95 L back in April. I don't have any pictures of my car up yet, but I just replaced my alternator myself and I have like two pictures of that (nothing good though). Just wanted to introduce my self!

Welcome Amy. I'm a bit new also, bought my 1994 in February 2005. Am getting a lot of good info on these forums. Hope they will help you too.

Hi everyone!

I joined the exclusive SVX ownership club about a month ago when I saw this 1992 sls vin #JF1CX3538NH100276 with 111k miles on the odometer at my local chevy/chrysler dealership in my tiny hometown.

I've been a Subaru owner for several years now, and was suprised to see that this car was actually a Subaru. I really liked the looks of the car so I talked to a salesman about it and he said they wanted $2200.00 for it. The test drive was a nightmare, no third gear, amazingly loud howl from the rear end, and engine oil pouring out of the timing belt cover. I know the guy pretty well, and he admitted that they never drove the car when it was traded in so I made em an offer of $500.00. The owner of the dealership told me they had about $1000 bucks into it but they let it go for my offer.

I found out later that the car had spent all but the last couple of months of its life in Hawai. I figure the trans must have went out after it was shipped up here to North Dakota, or the owner would have left it behind.

So what to do now that I own the car? Thank god I found this web site. I learned so much about the car and how to fix it cheap. I got a 4.44 transmission and rear end from a '96 legacy for $650.00 which my mechanic budy installed for $500.00 including swapping the LSD carrier from the SVX rear end into the legacy rear end. Then I went to work on the oil leak, replacing the crank seal, timing belt, and oil pump O-ring. That took care of the major oil leak, then it was time to look at the rear wheel bearings. I ordered in one set of bearings and seals and fixed the passenger side. This decreased the noise about 80%, but I guess the drivers side must be bad too so I just ordered another set. This job wasn't bad at all, but I've got a pretty well equipped farm shop and lots of pullers, slide-hammers and a press plus quite a bit of experience with wheel bearing repair. I used mobil synthetic wheel bearing grease and hope that will give me good life out of the bearings.

The result.... I love driving this car I'm amazed at how this thing drives and rides considering its age. It drives just as nice as my 2005 Outback XT plus its almost as quiet. I can't wait to have one of my buddies drive the outback and have a little drag race. The SVX really screams with the 4.44 gears.

I've totalled up my total investment in the car and figure that I've spent about $2200.00 on it including the initial $500.00 purchase price. There's still some work to do: repaint the top, replace all the vacuum hoses, check out the EGR solenoid, replace the other rear wheel bearing. But the car is ultra cool so I look forward to taking care of these problems.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice so far.
Steve Hart

Oh Really?!

Hi This is Joaxial's wife. I just read this blurb and agree that this is a pretty cool car, however, I will have something to say if he drag races MY outback.

Welcome to the site Steve. Question, you mentioned that you installed 4.44 gears, but your signature says 4.11. Did the transmission come from a '96 Legacy sedan or Legacy Outback?

The Legacy sedan has 4.11 gears, while the Legacy Outback has 4.44s!!!

I'll do it, since he's in the car so cheap it makes me sick, lol!

Your wheels are on the wrong side.

Also, you wanna come to IL and fix my ailing SVX for as cheap as you fixed yours? Then I wouldn't have to sell it.

Thanks for the heads up. Now that I look at it, they do look stupid! The weird thing is the directional tires are turning the proper way, so the guy who put the tires on must have screwed it up. I wonder if there are any other svx's in ND i've never seen another one.

Chike, I thought I was buying 4.11 gears, but the car runs 3000 rpm at 72 mph with the torque converter locked. According to SVXfiles that makes the gears 4.44. I'll change my signature. I wasn't around when my mechanic switched the LSD carrier into the gear case, so I didn't get to count the teeth.

Yup, 3000rpms at 72mph = 4.44 gears. Welcome to the 4.44 club!

Not too many in ND but there's a few just to the north of you

You should come up for a visit!

...I also figure we should hold a meet in Fargo for MN, ND and MB owners.
