brake shields?
hey guys,
Has anyone ever noticed that their brake shields (right inside of the discs) scrape the discs while you are turning? Mine make a real annoying sound when i am turning while going slow. Either way has anyone removed them before? Would it be ok to do so? Thanks! |

I had an issue with this after putting on my s/d rotors and pads. You can bend the shield back a bit or remove it. Personally, I think they were put there for a reason, mostly to keep excess water and road debris off, but if you drive on dry pavement for the most part, shouldnt be an issue...

Just bend them back don't take them off. They should not move when you turn though - they are mounted and move with the whole hub assembly.

Scraping shields.
If the shields scrape only when turning, then the wheel bearings have too much freeplay. This allows the hub, and disc, to move to touch the shield. Check the bearings.
Harvey.

Not exactly! There will always be a certain amount of 'flex', some cars more, some less. GM is notorius for play in their wheel bearings, front and rear. Their notion is that a little play is o.k. and keeps brake rotor lateral run-out from being a vibration issue. Honda, on the other hand, is just the opposite. Large. tight bearings and hyper-sensitive to brake vibes. Most cars favor the Honda end of the spectrum.
Either way the cure isn't removing the shields. If the bearings aren't making noise and there isn't any discernable play in them just tweak the shields to keep them from rubbing.

Yes I suppose it helps to push the pads back, but not what I would call good engineering.

I agree, it's a shoddy practice. But what do you expect from the only company that has to shim their starters, for 30+ years?
