Significant Technical Input
If indeed the rear diff is what caught fire (that's pretty toasty) nothing you do to the AWD will help you. You see, the problem would be with the rear diff and not the AWD. The AWD has absolutely nothing to do with the rear diff burning up.

It's cheaper to sell the car and buy a bicycle. Otherwise fix the car properly, don't try putting a band-aid on it.

This is kind of a strange one to figure out , I wish I could actually see it. First off it wouldn,t really be cheaper to just make it front wheel drive because unless you changed the rear spindals you would still need the axle shafts to keep the wheel bearing together and then you would still have to have the rear end to hold the other half of the shafts. So lets start with the fact that if you had mismatched tires or even gears some how, the ceter diff in the tranny would probly explode first. lets assume that you did put and have oil in the rear end, and that it was the right stuff 75/90, I still have never seen a rear end catch on fire, I'v seen something come apart inside and cause let to explode, I'v seen them run out of oil make bad noises and spin bearings, but not catch on fire. So is it posible that maybe the axle seals were leaking on the exaust and started the fire, is there an exaust leak near the rearend. There has to be a good reson for this to happen , but just make shure you fix it right , and good luck don't give up it still an awsome car.

Yeah the front side of the exhaust is near the rear diff. i guess., and I think thats what made the fire......the oil on the hot exhaust....Im having a insurance guy coming out to take a look at it for a claim.......

As far as the front wheel drive mod goes.... maybe this would work. Take out the rear axles and dissassemble them. The ends of the axles could then be installed into the wheels and rear diff You have to leave the "propeller shaft" in place so use the fuse for the FWD mode. However the car will be slower.

Oil leak onto the exhaust sounds like a good way to start a fire. Was there any other damage to the car? Is the undercoating burned off?

Im not sure if the undercoat was burned or what. But as far as I know its not that bad of fire damage. The bumper didnt melt or anything like that. I was just afraid that the whole car was gonna blow due to the gas tank igniting.

The only thing that I can figure is some kind of fluid ( rear diff oil, gasoline, engine oil) is somehow leaking on the exhaust system and igniting. Are all (ALL) your heat shields in place? Since the rear diffy caught fire twice, start you investigation there. Get the car fully warmed up, drive it a little bit then put it on a lift to check things out. Good Luck.

Larry......

I would try that, but the car is inoperative. When I drive it their are all sorts of noises and such.

They did fire tests on the gas tank, where they would light a tray on fire and push it under the tank, it held up pretty well, as long as you dont have a flame on it for a long time it should be fine.

Good, now you can analyze the problems. Describe where the noise comes from and what it sounds like. Also explain exactly what the car is doing (speed, gear, turning right or left, or going straight, etc.). Good Luck and try to be specific.

Putting in a good, used rear diff would be much easier and cost effective than making it FWD.

If you want FWD, you should buy a FWD car complete. They are
less expensive and lighter than the AWD cars.
