Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

Looking for a few opinion here. I just called my tire shop about getting a set of tires for my BBS wheels. These would be taken off before winter and be put on a car that only sees around 5000 miles per year, and is never driven hard.

Option 1 are tires from Sunny which is a low cost tire from China. They are $81, each so very budget friendly.

Option 2 is the Hancook Ventus which is at $139 per tire. ($58 more per tire) This is the tire I currently am using on my stock wheels and I have been happy with them.

I am leaning towards the more expensive ones, but still that price on the Sunnys is pretty damn tempting.

I'd get a midgrade Dunlop drop-shipped to my shop of choice from Tire Rack. With the tire tarriff China wears, you know those Sunnys have got to be low end China cheap.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

After looking on tire rack and reading the reviews (and with an eye towards price) these are the tires I am thinking of:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

I'm very close to ordering them.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

I have been happy with The Falken ZEIX tires, for summer use, if cost is a big concern. On stock wheels, the 215/55/16 H rated tires were $55 each delivered, and are wearing well. A set of the same tire in the 225/50/16 did not wear as well.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

General and Continental always rank highly on both dry and wet roads and are reasonably priced. For me, summer tires are all about wet braking and wet handling. That becomes an issue far more often than pulling .9 Gs on dry road. Also, look at treadepot.com before pulling the trigger. They sometimes have a better price than Tire Rack.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

I am running Ventus V12 evo and I like them.
They stick to wet road like its dry pavement.
This is my second summer on them.
Tires is one them things I don't think its a good idea to cheap out on.

+1.

I used the Yokohama s.drive ones when I had my stock rims. I might still swap them over to my black car eventually. They were very good.

Now I'm using these, and they're fantastic: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....I&autoModClar=

I don't know if they come in the right size to use with the stock rims though.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

The Falken zeix I had on the XJR were the worst tires I have ever had. Worse than even the legendary bridgestone RE92 that has plagued subarus for years now. Well ok, if you liked wheelspin at 70mph and 30% throttle they were good at that as just a hint of water ensured said wheelspin.

Maybe they fixed that but there is a wide wide array of seriously good tires out there.

They are expensive, but I'm currently drooling over the new Michelin Super Sports. So far the reports seem to indicate top class grip combined with 300 treadwear rating. They even have a 30,000 mile warrenty.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

I would get Michelin tires if I had the money, but that brand is just way too much. I was also considering a a Bridgestone Potenza Grid. They have a decent special on them right now.

Also I guess I wasn't clear, not that it matters but, these are not going on stock wheels they are going on the 17" 06 STI BBS wheels that I just picked up. My stock wheels will be going on winter duty. HuskeyManiac - thanks for the tip I'm going to check them out.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

Best handling dry tire I've ever driven on:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

Sure they're a little loud but they grip like the v700 and from the looks of it I'll see 15k out of 'em. Not bad in the rain unless you're driving through standing water in a 2000lbs car. The Kuhmo LEs are far superior to the Contis on the XJR that I replaced in terms of silent driving. Not the most spirited of driving tire but overall a much better tire than the howls like a dog in heat Conti. Kuhmo had a $100 rebate card on them when I got mine (which the wife wouldn't need to know about). I have to work hard to get the rear end to break loose once I reach 3rd gear. I've never had luck witg Hankook's. One always looses its round before they get worn out.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

one vote for cheap tires here. i hate the thought of buying 4 new tires if i pop one at half wear or get some uneven wear that can't be fixed. i have some cheap nankang tires on during the summer, no complaints. hankook studded i-pikes during the winter, also good.

Funny you should ask about Sunny's I have a set of them on my car and they have been on there for 2 years they still have decent tread they handle the corners very well they dont flex much, though I am running 225/40/18
I moved from North Dakota they drove 2000 miles no problems.
I think they have a bit of noise issue on the road though. Nothing that is a problem just a hum sometimes.

Re: Summer tire decision - go cheap or not?

Well that is one vote for Sunny. The tire guy told me those were fine, but only came with about half the tread depth as a name brand tire. That would probably be okay in my case, but after thinking it over for a day, I have figured that I will have the tires a long time and I may as well spend the extra $100 to get something I trust.
