Rack and pinion questions

I purchased a new rack a while ago, and I am now getting ready to put it in. I have the engine out, but not the old rack yet. I noticed the "head" or "pinion housing" on the old one has an extra sulanoid, as opposed to the one i bought. After doing some research I have found that my 92 LSL has the variable assist, and the rack I bought does not.
Heres my questions...
Can I swap the heads? My rack has a bad seal on the inner tierod side.
Can I bypass the sulanoid and just have regular power steering?
Am I screwed because I cannot return this rack?
Thanks for the help.
