Slightly OT, 1990 2.2L performance question...
I'd like to get more torque from this engine for an install in a VW Vanagon camper, I've considered converting to a 2.5L, but I want to keep the OBD1 controll system and all, is there a place that regrinds legacy cams for more lift and duration? What about performance software? I'd like to get into the 160-180lb range, bur 200 would be fun it needs to stay simple to keem CA SMOG happy

If I understand correctly, you can mount the 2.2 heads directly onto a 2.5 block, this would allow you to retain the OBDI ECU, and get you some more bottom end....just a thought...

I dont think it would be worth messing with older ej25s, to many problems, with piston slap, and blowing head gaskets. I also heard thet if you do swap the ej22 heads onto a ej25 that it will raise your compresion ratio enough to require 91 octane or higher, or it may be the other way around if you swap ej25 heads on a ej22 block. I think the 90-94 ej22 non turbo had 135 ft pound of torq or right around there, and there about as many or less performance parts for that engine as there is for the eg33. You could always put the ej22t into then you have 160 horse and 180 ft pound of torq, and that was a rock solid motor.

I already have the ej22, I'd be happy if I could milk another 25 lbs of torque out of it, the 117lbs stock in the vanagon are fine on flat ground, but up hills is a bit of a challange. The ej22 swap into a vanagon is already done and certified in the state of CA so I can just put a sticker on the car and take it to any SMOG shop, with anything else I would need to go to a referee station first and jump through extra hoops. I may install the engine first and play with it later, and big if I can sell the old engine for $1000...

I would just get a light weight puulie, a good exaust/ intake, and then upgrade the ignition. You would probley gain 15 or more ft pounds of torq over stock. I think theres even less a\parts for that engine then tere are for the eg33. I think there are headers for it tho. I will try to find the place with them.

i think cobb used to have a kit for the old imprezza that pumped it above the 200 hp mark without turbo or nitrus. ask trey, this was back when i had a 95 legacy, but he would know for sure.

I thought that was for the 2.5 liter, new heads, intake exhaust, and all that small stuff. |

I think I'll stick it in stock for now and start grabing parts from the u-pull-it yards to build a 2.5L motor, and big HP isn't an issue, I'm interested in torque.

Then why not install a EG33?

2.2l is much cheaper and runs on regulas gas, I can do it for $1500 while doing the eg33 would be more like $5000 with a traney overhaul, lsd, regearing (70mph = 4000rpm) and engine work, the eg33 will need to be reassembeled.

The 2.2, or the 2.5 will have to turn the same RPM as the 3.3, and they have a lower redline....and you said you wanted torque

but I want fuel economy too, with the SVX engine I would get 14-16 mpg on premium fuel, the 2.2 would be more like 20-22 on regular. When you drive 2000+ miles a month it matters, I really want to be able to drive up mountians at the speed limit(or a bit more)

you could throw the 2.5 crank in the ej22 to up the displacement a bit. It'd get you to 2.35 IIRC. What would be cool to do, is a custom water injection kit, and up the compression a bit. With that stuff, I'm not sure how much more power you'd make but it'd be an interesting build none the less
