How about an electric SVX??

With no engine in my '92 but otherwise in really good shape, someone suggested I convert it to electric. Anyone ever done this or even looked into what is involved? How crazy is this??

Re: How about an electric SVX??

Pretty crazy. You could buy 10-20 used SVX engines for the same cost of converting to electric.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

True...but it would be a really cool electric car, has a very low CD which should help a little with range.....

I've seen electric conversions being done on much more massive vehicles

See what I did there?

Re: How about an electric SVX??

Not to mention a lot of the mass of a SVX is the EG33 & 4EAT which would both be gone in an electric conversion...

Clever. Apologies; I forget that I'm in the era of two-ton "pony cars"!

You can't make it sound free, however - an SVX without a driveline is just Fred Flintstone's car!

Dropping from a 4EAT to a 5MT would lose some pounds, but how long would it hold the torque? Might consider the 6MT for robustness, but you wind up close to where you were for mass, and they aren't cheap.

Then, there's batteries. Conventional ones will weigh plenty more than the EG33, and lithium ion will still outweigh the EG33, but they'll cost a fortune.

Add electric motor and electric power steering.

Even on a lithium ion budget, you're looking at the far side of two tons.

Neato and unique? Sure. Sensible or affordable? Not so sure.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

No transmission, lower the car as low as possible. No exhaust so flatten the undercarriage with Aero trays.

Use front hub motors 50hp each, mount batteries in the transmission/engine well and keep the balance as OEM as possible. Done and done.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

Interesting range of ideas! I've still not gotten around to even doing a search on such a conversion, but keep the ideas coming. It's all food for thought!

Thanks,
Rod.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

How about mounting the motor to the transmission mount, driving the rear diff with a driveshaft. Then use the underhood area for the batteries, and controller? You could use an XT6 electric power steering pump. If you needed to, you could also use some of the trunk for batteries too. You may need the extra power for the extra mass.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

I have always like the idea of converting my BRAT to electric. Perfect place to store the battery packs in the bed. Lightweight only 2400 pounds stock. Hmmm, now I wish that I could have money to do it, maybe shold buy lottery ticket. If I was a millionaire, yes, I would still drive a BRAT but it would be electric......am I that crazy?

btw, SVX way too heavy to do electric convo on. Heck, even the stock trans had problems moving the car reliably, same goes for brake rotors.....
besides the BRAT, maybe would like to do up a 360 VAN as electric conversion. Those 360 are neat as 2cycle though....wish there were some around me to go looksie at.

Re: How about an electric SVX??

Very late addition to this thread:

An electric Forester. Slow acceleration but a nifty project.
