Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
Why not do an AWD swap?
It's quite a bit easier to replace the whole trans than just the diff.

Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
Are you opposed to anything other than the stock FWD 3.70? Any gear front diff will work FYI. And since you only need a diff, you can look around for FWD impreza/legacy transmissions as well. Those have a 3.90 but still should be nice cruising on the highway.

Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
This search may be just as long so far I can only find the legacy rear diffs on ebay.I will do a broader search after work.

Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
With a 3.90 and some sticky tires you may just beat your own 1/4 mile record!

Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
Typically no one will sell just a front diff from a Subaru trans. Look for a FWD complete transmission. 90-95 FWD legacy will work and 93-95 Impreza FWD. I believe it's only the MT fwd impreza that has the goofy "EA" style axles.

Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
How did you come to the conclusion that the diff is bad? You mean the carrier is bad or the pinion/crown wheel combo is bad?
Swapping the carrier (if there is a problem with the side/spider gears or their shaft) is straight forward if you are prepared to dig in that far.... if the pinion, its bearings or the crown wheel is bad you enter a stage further down the road of diffculcy. The tranny needs to come down anyway, but if it is "just" the carrier you may use one from any 4EAT - even a phase 2 and keep you original pinion undisturbed and use the crown wheel too. These are a matched pair and must be used as such. You might be able to trouble shoot further thru the drain plug.... Kind regards, Tapani |

Quote:
If you have to mess with the pinion it is much easier to swap the whole transmission (including the diff). Also, I understand that the pinion changed a bit around 1994 and the transfer gears at the tail end are not interchangable. Again - what's wrong with you "diff"? Let's start with that . Re: need fwd diff 3.70 gear ratio
I started feeling a clunky engaging 3 years ago and after that i got a funny sound like a broke axle on the driverside that my telltell sound my diff is gone is was purchase used also.So my best bet is to just go ahead and get the entire legacy tranny, sorry I didnt see your attachment before I s.ee it now.
