Your CD player is 10 years old and apparently very tired. My advice is to replace it with an aftermarket radio/CD player (I never play tapes so I skipped those models). I picked one up at Best Buy for $160.00, installed it myself (very easy) and I love it. It even came with a remote control that I mounted to the steering wheel so I can change stations, songs, volume, etc. without taking my hands off the wheel.

By the way, you can still purchase a brand new stock CD player from Subaru...they cost $500.00 (that's JUST the CD player!!!).

If you're intent on staying stock, like i am, You could try taking it to a local repair/install shop. The only other thing I could think of is to look for Panosonic on the web and see who their authorized repair facility is, and send it there.

What to do with extra space.

If I replace my CD player, I will need to find something to fill the empty space. Is the plastic tray that fits where the CD player is located still available? If so, how much should they run? Thanks.

plastic pockets are pretty much universal. On my invoice it says mine was for a Toyota.

Trays from earlier model Legacies will fit, although you may have to drill a couple of holes in the cage to fit the tray. My dealer had a pile that they had taken out of cars, and gave it to me. It might not hurt to ask.

empty space

I used the empty space beneath my new radio/cd player to install a 3 socket power strip. Now I can run my radar detector and charge my cell phone at the same time.
