Well crap!

I just remembered that I forgot to remove the bolt holding the intake cam gears together

Another "I feel like a dumbass" moment

At least I remembered now and not later.

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

More work done today. Not as much as I'd hoped, a friend lost her job so I spent a while with her. Friends trump car.

But I got the oil pan put back on, although I think I probably used too much RTV. Hopefully it won't be a problem.

Also removed my bolt from the intake cam gear from last night.

Then it was just putting things back together. Slow going, but I'm making progress. For anyone else doing this, label the hoses. There were a few that I labeled, but most I figured would make sense because of location. Not so much. It's making things take a lot longer.

I couldn't find a plug for the EGR hole in the exhaust manifold, so I finally just cut the pipe and had someone weld it shut.

Oh, and I installed the locking pin in the front passenger half shaft @ the diff. I have had some suspension noise ever since I got the car, and when we got it apart I noticed that that locking pin has been missing since I bought the car So not cool. It was a pain to get in, but hopefully it'll make things better.

Finally, tomorrow my ebay timing belt kit will be here.

Here are today's pictures:

The offending bolt:

Oil pan on:

Intake Manifold

My solution for the EGR line on the intake manifold side

I used high temp silicone to re-attach the little brackets that hold the coil pack wires on.

Starting to come together

My welded and re-installed EGR thing

And finally my new locking pin

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

Now would have been a good time to install some thermo spacers on the intake.

Im surprised you didn't paint the intake plenum since it was off, but the engine is coming along very nicely

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

Looks really good, nice work! I'm actually doing the exact same thing, but school's making it take about a thousand times longer I anticipated... Anyway I had a couple of questions:
1. I noticed the copper spray-a-gasket, is that really helpful and should it be applied to all gaskets or just the head gaskets?
2. As far as that egr hose off the exhaust manifold, what effect does just plugging the hole have?
3. And you haven't gotten there yet but like you were saying, I was thinking the hoses are going to be a pain. When i took the intake manifold off those egr hoses broke like twigs. So I guess the question is when you break hoses like that, can you just get a hose that has the same specs and cut it to length or do you have to get the oem hoses?

1. The copper gasket sealer was recommended to me by the folks over at the local dealer. I used it on the head gaskets and on the intake manifold gaskets, although I didn't take a picture of the intake manifold ones after they were sprayed.

2. I removed the whole EGR system, so to keep exhaust from filling everything up I needed to plug the hole. Don't want a big old exhaust leak in the engine bay!

3. For a few of the hoses (PCV, etc...) that are molded in very odd shapes I have gotten OEM, but for other stuff I just get lengths of hose from the local auto parts store.

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

Today was a lot of cleaning, and waiting for the nice UPS lady to show up.

My eBay timing belt kit came in and I am very happy with the quality. It was purchased from The Import Experts on ebay (they also have a website). Since they have a brick and mortar store they have a phone number posted on their website. I was able to call and arrange expedited shipping. They were a pleasure to deal with and I would highly recommend them to anyone. (They show as shipping from Washington State)

I am having a hell of a time with the rear main seal. It took up most of my night so I finally gave up.

Here are the pictures:

Cleaner cross-member

Clean Power Steering Pump

Cleaned up PS and Alt. tension bracket. It was pure black when Is started

New idlers installed

Timing Belt on. The orange RTV is to help hold the rear cover in place since a few bolt locations were broken

Back together

Ready for a new rear-main seal (The little nicks that the flash brought out are only on the outside, the surfaces where the seal goes is perfectly smooth.

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

Don't put that engine in yet... Those mounts are shimmed WAY too far out. You need to take the washers out and measure 1/4" of them combined. Looks more like a 1/2" as they sit and you don't even have a full nut's worth of threads on the studs

The washers on each side measure in at exactly 1/4" on my tape.

Should it be 1/4" including the plate?

No the spacer should be that alone plus the stock plate

Re: Techy's engine pull progress thread

Sorry, looked at the pictures again. I was seeing the reflection of the washers off the bottom side of the mounts that made it look like you had twice the washers in there that you do... My bad

Oooohhhh, I think what you're seeing is a reflection of the washer stack against the black paint. It's not at the best angle.

EDIT: Hah, we both just posted at exactly the same time.
