As previously mentioned, spray belt dressing on the belts. If the sound goes away, then it's a loose belt. Tighten it or change it.

o.k so, I went searching and turns out, my fan is making the noise, the passenger one on the radiator. I guess a new one is in order.

Think unplugging the fan will cause a problem?

Being that is winter you may be able to slide by w/ it unplugged until you can get a new one. I would give it a try if it were my car and just keep an eye on the temp gage. It was in the 80's here today and I had my a/c on, but I am sure where you are the temps are low enough that you aren't really looking for cold air. Why the hell is it 84 in December?!

I had the exact same squealing problem coming from my belts - it would happen sometimes when I started up and became more frequent as the weather got colder. I tests to see if my belt was loose (using two fingers if you can rotate the belt 90 degrees, it may be a little loose - a trick I learned from John). My belts were tight but the sound didn't stop, so I sprayed with some belt dressing and that helped a lot but the problem never fully went away.

It could also be the belt slipping on the little pulley underneath the AC compressor. Which is what I think my problem was the whole time.
Last weekened, when some SVX friends and I replaced my compressor, we discovered that the pulley was frozen. It no longer was turning and I found chunks of the burnt ac belt in its teeth. Luckily, I had planned on replacing everything in that area while replacing the compressor so I already had a new pulley.

side note: has anyone else noticed that the subaru belts have this fuzziness to their teeth that aftermarket belts do not?

O.k Belts dont seem loose I checked the it and it turns 1/4 or 90 degrees. I thought it was the fan as when i check it yesterday were the noise appeared to be coming from. The squealing happened again last night with the A/C off while I was driving. I know the fan squealing sounds weird but I could have swore that is were ti was coming from. I tried again today to locate the noise but its not squealing. It is considerably warmer today.

Noticable things:
1) Seems to only squeal when AC/Heater is on. Except last night when I left heater running for awhile and turned it off it kept squealing for a bit.
2) Only would squeal for a few seconds when first starting the car with Air on.
3) Belts are not loose as I can only turn them less then 1/4 I think .
4) I think the Passenger side radiator fan is squealing but I am not sure

It is must annoying and impressing to drive down the street hearing it. Any other help would be great. And much thanks to those who already tried to help.

Passenger Radiator Fan

O.k I pulled in my drive way and the noise started, I quickly Popped the hood and was listening for the sound. First I was thinking it was coming from the power steering but then something happened. The fans were on (Radiator Fans) and then they shut off and the noise went off too. I am 90% Sure it is the Passenger side fan. Guess its dying and I need a new one.

Radiator fan?

I had your exact symptoms last spring. Loud squeal with AC on - seemed to go away with AC off but would return intermittently. Noise seemed to be at the compressor area. Thought I had a loose belt but everything seemed tight. Just happened to try the driver side fan and found bearings shot! It wobbled all over the place! New fan fixed the problem. Permanently lubricated bearings - aren't!

See if you can move either of your fans forward or backward on the bearings - it is not supposed to.

Good luck with yours.

Tom

Another thing to keep in mind is when your fans turn on they are putting additional load on the alternator which could be causing the belt slippage making it appear as though it is your fans causing the noise.

I wish you could hear/see it because I am pretty sure its the fan. At first I thought it was the belt but I opened up the hood when I had the car off, but on the on position and the fans were on and bam the noise

O.k it is for sure the fan, I need a new passenger side radiator fan. I tested it today, I had the car running and it started squealing and I cut the car off, switched it to the on position and then the sounded started. I open the hood and listen the only thing moving is the fans and the noise is there. I put my hand ontop of the pass. fan and it is vibrating bad. I compared the driver and pass. fans and there is a difference as the Pass. is vibrating badly compared to the driver.

So I need a new pass fan, anyone have one and price shipped would be an awesome thing and thanks to everyones help on this issue.

Would unplugging the fan be a bad idea?
