Mine get around 21 mpg overall (say 380 miles per tank), and the majority of my driving is short trips that hardly give the torque converter a chance to lock. On the freeway, fully warmed, with the cruise set a tick over prevailing traffic speeds, it's 27+. dcb |

Your mileage is at the bottom of the scale. If you are doing all short city runs with the engine coolant heating up all the time your gas mileage will suck, it's that simple. If you don't actually have sensor problems I have a few tips that will definitely bring your mileage up. 1) Pump tires harder than standard. I use 35F 31R 2) Don't use the aircon except in hot summer weather. Heater works fine without it. 3) Drive in 3 rather than D in slow traffic. Your engine works in the sweet efficient part of the torque range, rather than using the torque converter all the time. Joe

'97 cars came standard with 215s rather than 225s You will only notice the steering is lighter at slow speeds. For braking, for grip, for tire wear it will be the same. Switch to D for highways, anything over 55. Joe

Check the on-board diagnostics [OBD1] for fault codes.
Full instructions are given in the How-To section above. Joe

O.k I had a 25 mile increase on my 3/4 tank. I use to get 150 on 3/4, using the 3 and air pressure. I believe i gained about 2 MPG around town. Now I drove about 20-30 miles using D because someone else was driving so I might have been able to get more out of it.

This should blow all your minds... On a trip back from Reno, with my Dad, I got 530+ miles on 1 tank@ 17something gallons. That's over 31 MPG!!! From just outside Reno, NV to Goldendale, WA.
My mileage would have been BETTER but I decided to take her up to 135 for a few miles in the looooong, flat deserted area of I 395... The miles seem to go by real quick at that rate

I usaually average around 23 per gallon mix driving. Highway is about 26 and town is around 19. The most I did is around 370 on a full tank with red light on and have about 1 to 2 gallons left in the car.
Considered the weight, auto and all-wheel drive, that's better that half of the average cars today. Peace, sid |

I have a leak that drips on my right O2 sensor and it's throwing a code. I might need to fix the leak and get a new O2 sensor, then it's off to better Mileage...I hope

When I used to commuted to NJ (200 miles round trip all highway) I would get 400-425 miles before the light would come on. Now I work 20 miles away and get around 300 miles on local roads.
