Cool Re: Adjusting the TPS

Hey Trevor I replaced my AAVC a couple of years ago - NZ$40.00 (also got Giltraps to give me back the old one - they said it was a non-serviable part..)

The car was smoking during idle - white/grey smoke, thought it was oil (which it was - the AAVC was clogged, bi-mettalic strip could not pull shut because of oil)- I cleaned the old one out with white spirits - now boxed in my garage, checked it with 12V pulled close no problems.

Glad to see you return..

Steve

Trevor isn't back yet. This last post from him on this topic was back in 2007

Hi Seth

We'll have to get Trevor back soon to give us the definitive answer to these questions.

I'll venture my opinion for what it is worth:

First and foremost you are supposed to set this voltage value with the ignition on, and it's fair to presume that this means just the ignition and no ancillaries. In that respect you may be the first to notice these differences with the fans.

Do you mean the engine cooling fans? I presume so, they would be a heavy draw. This may mean you are adjusting the TPS after a drive while the engine is hot. I would advise adjusting it on a cold engine with nothing running nor switched on except the ignition. Not having checked this out for myself I don't know for certain, but I would expect the voltage drop you noted is normal when the fans are drawing. Remember with only the ignition switched on, you are drawing directly from the battery, which is a finite source. The alternator is not pumping up the system as it will when the engine is running.

Regards your code 31 you should possibly run the second TPS test in the How-Tos, the one from SVX _Commuter.

What goes wrong with an old TPS can be the position where the internal wiper arm normally sits while you are driving [say you drive at 2200 RPM for the sake of argument] this portion of the slider wears at that position. The voltage is meant to change smoooooothly as Trevor says over the range of the device. If voltage jumps or changes momentarily to zero at the worn position, this will throw the TPS code. There is no fix for this that we know of except replace it with a new one.

Joe

Re: Adjusting the TPS

Joe, you are correct about a normal voltage drop with the fans drawing amps from just the battery.

I would think that adjustment of the TPS would seldom, if ever be necessary without some damage being done to the unit. Seems like adjustment might find an undamaged place to routinely operate the unit and giving it some more life.

Just a thought...
Keith

Re: Adjusting the TPS

Thanks Keith for the backup

It's a fair point you make, that having to reset the unit may imply it has wear at some point.

However, moving the end point will only make a difference to what revs the slider runs past the "bad" spot. Always assuming it is wear that caused the upset.

If it still runs past the bad spot as you are revving through 1,2 and 3 range it will still throw up the bad voltage and possibly throw a code. It might extend the life of the TPS, but it is so critical to engine tuning, I would still advise changing it to have the car run right. You might recover the cost of the new TPS in gas consumption saved.

However before buying a new one [they are over a hundred bucks!!] I would certainly be running that second TPS test to be sure there actually was a "bad" spot causing the problem.

Joe

Re: Adjusting the TPS

I did it with the car running at operation temp. Then adjusted it to .48 then the fans kicked on and i noticed the drop but after they stopped it went back to .48. i also got the code cleared i think because i unplugged the battery all night and plugged it back in and check for codes and only got the CEL blinking a million times so i assume there is no more codes.

Re: Adjusting the TPS

What is the cheapest price for a tps anyway? I was thinking they were at least $200 and am rather certian that mine is worn in a single spot.

(The tps on my truck acted like it was bad, but never threw a code. I delt with it's random idle hunting (it would only act up when I couldn't test it) for 9 yrs before it finally threw a code. Tested it over a dozen times on an o-scope during that time too. I finally replaced it and all is well.)

It's a year or two since I bought one, so I'm not sure on price.

Try ringing Jackie at Annapolis Subaru, good service, in fact excellent, and price is always keen.

Re: Adjusting the TPS

Can I get a confirmation on what temp the engine has to be when checking the voltage? I read the 92 manual and it mentions at operating temp and then others have said check on a cold engine.
What's the majority vote: Cold Engine or warm operating temp engine?

It does not matter.
The voltage SHOULD read the same. ( 0.48V.)
