Lightbulb Torque converter seperation info (bolts)

I want to share something that I have learned about the torque converter bolts and their removal/installation.
The SVX shop service manual describes removing the torque converter bolts by using a standard crescent/box end wrench. The last time I pulled an SVX transmission I endded up stripping the head on two of those pesky bolts by trying to do it that way. This time I learned from my mistake and instead removed the alternator and (carefully) inserted an 18" extension under the intake plenum. I used a 3/8" ratchet and it fit ok under there. I don't know how well a 1/2" one would fit though. The bolts were a bit stuck but I didn't even slip off once. It may have taken me a few extra minutes to remove the alternator but I know that they would have been a lot harder or even impossible to remove with the crescent/box end wrench. Last time I had to replace all four of the bolts but this time they will all be reusable. I hope this will help out anyone who does their tranny in the future. Maybe a mention of this should go into a "Tips and Tricks" if we have one.
Jay

P.S. I am on very little sleep so please forgive any spelling (etc.) errors here.

Hmm those bolts are only spec'd to be torqued to 17-20 ft-lbs so they shouldn't be too hard to get out....Unless someone previously made sure they were 'real tight'

It can be done with a box/open end wrench, even with a 1/4" driver if you have one small enough, but getting the torque on that one is not easy...

If you need any other tranny r/r help let me know...I've done it on mine.

Hope you have the front of the car high enough in the air to get the tranny out

tranny

I 'm actually pulling the engine. The bolts were more stuck than realy tight. I pulled the engine and trans out of the black one together. I lifted the whole assembly out. That was a really tight fit. I know it can be done with a wrench but it was so much easier with the ratchet/extension.
Thanks for the reply Steve.

Feeling slightly better. Caffine is amazing isn't it?
