Engine ran cold, now runs hot

Well at least that's what it says on the temp gauge. Was running around 1/8th to a 1/4. Took a while to register too. For the past 65k it has always run at a rock steady 1/3 on the gauge. Replaced the water pump, t-stat, front seals and t-belt. Still was running at the 1/8 to an 1/4. Took it out and cleaned it, no change. Swapped out the gauge temp sensor (the one wire top one) with one from an engine that's lying around here. Now it runs nearly dead center on the gauge (middle of the thermometer on the gauge). Only trouble codes are a flash for the coolant temp sensor when I swapped 'em and cleaned it out. Cleared it and it went away. Any ideas out there?

Oh and the engine feels about the same, fans come on about the same as before etc so I'm thinking it is a gauge reading issue.

Mine had never been in the middle though in the 8 years I've owned it except when my radiator had a crack in it.

well mid-way has always been the case in all the SVXi I have driven, unless they were overheating

So ya think its been going out for 8 years just in 2 drastic drops. Its baffling.

Race car runs at about a 1/3 too BTW provided you remember to turn on the fans.

that I cannot explain. But I can tell you, ask anyone on the board here. A normal SVX will run at the halfway point. Just like mine does now that it doesn't leak coolant

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
All of our SVXi read just a hair under the halfway mark
(unless there is a problem.)

Years ago Subaru had "a fix" for a high reading temp gaugein the XTs.
Since the gauge read higher than their customers were used to, they had the dealers install small resistors to lower the indicator.
