Smallcar.com makes a grill the is similar to the 97 grill, but the "mesh" isnt surrounded...it's open on the top, much like the waterfall peice

Ah ha! I wondered if it wasn't something like that! Thanks Eric!

The '97 grille is sturdy. I have bought one for mine. Although many love the Waterfall grille, and it is unique and instantly recognisable on the SVX, I prefer the more modern look of the new grille.

Rather than the square plastic matrix in the centre I have a feeling that the grille would be more beefy if it had the metal woven mesh centre like for instance that which is standard on a Jaguar XJR. I'm looking to see if this may be possible to do. I'm trying to figure a neat way to cut out the existing square section plastic centre. However, it occurs that with the woven metal mesh in place in front of that black plastic, the black plastic will not be seen.

Maybe this will be easier than I thought

Yes it is ... just use gutter guard ... and cut it to fit

This is the waterfall but should work out the same with the 97. I think that's my next project when I give in and buy a 97 grille.

That's a neat job Redsvx.

The mesh you have used here is expanded metal mesh and is particularly easy to bend to shape.

The Jaguar woven metal mesh I mentioned is not so easy to mould to shape, although cutting a flat section of it should be easy enough. I'm going to buy a sheet or two and see what can be done.

I will do Bob.

I've found a place in England that does the mesh.

It looks to me like that style of woven mesh is what SmallCar Performance uses to make their grille. It looks good in pictures, and I was hoping that the "completely surrounded" shape of the '97 grill might look even better with it. The "open at the top" shape of the Smallcar grille looks OK, but I've read a number of posts on here that suggests it is a little flimsy in construction.

Possibly the full surround of the '97 shape may be stronger. I'll post the pics when I make progress

Joe

Joe,

The small car grille was a real disappointment. It is not real diamond mesh screening, but rather a solid piece of black plastic with a raised embossed plastic design to simulate it.

Look closely at the mesh. In the center of each diamond, a small round hole was drilled out for air flow.

It doe not allow for as much air to flow through the grille as either the 97 or the waterfall grille, whose openings were a lot larger. You would have to dremel out the spaces to the contour of the" mesh", which would make it even flimsier.

Now I see what you mean. I see the little holes. Rubbish all right.

This may seem strange to you, but the UK waterfall grille lets in no air at all. There is a blank piece of plastic at the top, stops all incoming air.

The JDM ones are open at the top, above the waterfall. I can't imagine why this airflow aperture was closed off in the UK ones. The engineers must presume that enough air flows in underneath the bumper to keep it all cool.

There is one difference in the nose of the cars that may account for this. With JDM cars and US cars the front number plate is square. The lower part of it protrudes below the upper bumper, effectively blocking some of the air making its way to the radiators. Possibly having the waterfall grill open compensates for this, or vice versa with the UK rectangular and wide number plate, sufficient air feeds through the lower aperture to keep everything cool, and an open waterfall grille is not needed.

Any thoughts?

Joe

Hey John,

I actually dremeled out the holes in my small car grille. It did not make it flimsy what-so-ever. Also, it looks much better. It was a pain in the @$$, but worth it.

Pictures...don't mind my dirty car...it's been really wet around here.

I'm liking that more than the 97' grille, a good compromisse between the 'modern' look and the 'original' look of the waterfall
