new sound system

I just had a new sound system installed in one of my SVX's Sounds MUCH better.
Just had a question, the guys that did the install said, it did not have tweeters installed in those little covers on the dash, and there was no wiring. Was it only certain models that had tweeters from factory then? Or was it an option?

Yes, only the LS-L models had them. If you have the CD, you would probably have the tweeters.

Mines an LS, and it did have a CD player, just no tweeters.
Just seems weird they would put the covers in and leave out the tweeters.

They all have covers. If there weren't any covers, you would just have 2 holes without tweeters in the dash.

Howdy,

Sorry to change the subject a BIT, but this is MAINLY on topic...

Trying to get my new DVD player in (in-dash dual tier touchscreen), and cant' get the wires to fit (depth problems). SOooo... that means that I gotta "help" them along a bit, via other entrances. Would anyone happen to have any details on removing interior panels, most notably the one around the knee area of the driver all along the under the wheel?

Thanks.

You might wanna ask thumpersvx (Gavin Haslett) as I beleive that he opened that area up to help him install a new system easier. Maybe there are photos in his personal locker.
Good luck,
Marisa

I haven't pulled any of the dash panels (other than the small piece on the left side of the transmission hump that covers the antenna connectors.

You might have some luck removing the glovebox and grabbing the harness from the right side. That's the direction that the radio harness wires go from behind the radio (see attached photo — dash opening with radio and cage removed).

I think there's too much metal surrounding the radio to actually get your hand behind the radio — from any angle. At best you might be able to tie a pull-string to the harness and pull the slack from behind as you slide the radio in.

Another possibility might be to remove the AC control pod to reach in from above, but I have a feeling that you won't be able to reach all the way back once the cage is half way in.

Which DVD player model? Did you have to hack the cage for it to fit?

Got it to go. Not perfect, but it looks ok. Looks great with the covering panel down, but when its up you can tell the lines don't quite line up...

Its a Jensen VM9021TS. Looks sharp, and has really good reviews. Only problem is the man at circuit city lied to me, and I DO need a cord. Well, he will be the one pulling it apart and getting it to fit back again, **** doing that again! I've never had to take 2 days on any radio install, especially just for the H/U! Boy what a nightmare.

I ended up making my hand do a contortionist thing through the whole where the ashtray was, and just sticking wire by wire down there. I also bent the rear brackets a little, like it says to for a WRX dual DIN install. After that I got it to go with minimal grunt work. Can't get in from any other angle, tried em all, so don't bother ripping your interior apart.

Now I can't get the damn kickpanel to go back in (the one on the drivers side that you remove to access the antenna). Stupid design.

Thanks guys, I'll try and get some pictures of it eventually.

Craig

Ok stupid question here I know. But what do you guys do with a DVD in the SVX. Is it hooked into a screen for kids or what. I can see a DVD in a van to transport kids over long journeys but can't really see it in an SVX. However, I'm sure I'm missing something here.... I sure wouldn't mind listening to some of my live concert DVDs in the car but I can't see watching them....

Its incredible what some people do with DVD players, I know of someone with one installed on the steering wheel.
Thank god it is not an SVX he drives!

My sound system so far is going to be a double-DIN DVD player/nav unit. I don't care about the DVD capability, but I like the big touch screen and navigation. Front speakers are Energy 6.5's with crossover 1" tweeters, rears are Energy 6x9 3-ways. Sub system as yet undecided.

Dash unit:

Fronts:

Rears:

I'd get the tilt screen nav unit, but it costs about $1100 more.

You can probably fix that — slightly loosen the two screws that hold the cage into the dash and nudge the right and left sides of the cage up or down until it's lined up (and the SVX's cover door can freely open, close, and latch). Then tighten the screws.

A cord for what? For the iPod connection? (requires the Jensen jLINK cable)

Yes, it's a little tricky. Attach the three yellow snap fasteners back onto the small kickpanel. Start with the edge nearest the seat (with the opposite end angled far away from the hump), and then swing the panel into place, twisting the piece slightly so you can tuck the top-front edge into place behind the large dash panel (the section that runs under the steering wheel).

Burn a DVD with a bazillion hours of MP3 music?

Navigation map data for the entire US is much larger than a single CD, so it makes sense to have a DVD reader for that purpose alone. Just because it can play movies doesn't mean you have to actually do it while you're driving.

Ok I'm getting it now. That's a sweet dvd/nav system. What's cool about the SVX is if you can get it all tucked in behind the door....
Thanks for the info... might consider something like that some day...

My pipe dream system....

The Bose Media System. The website doesn't post a price, but it's standard equipment in the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

What I'll likely end up with...$99 @ Wal-Mart
