Internet Explorer help please.
I'm having all kinds of problems with this thing. How do I get a new browser or fix this one? I keep getting a 'page not found' or 'cannot find server', but I can usually refresh enough times until it catches. But it will often have a lot of red x's. And then when it just won't load the page anymore, I can usually reboot my modem and it will work for awhile. When I turn my computer on in the morning, it usually works perfectly for about a half hour before the crap starts. Assuming the modem is good, as Verizon says again and again, what can I do. They say I need to delete it and reload it with help from manu- emachines. But they haven't always been correct in the past. Obviously, I don't know a heck of a lot about this stuff so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you can get a fresh download from microsoft.com on the downloads page, but it sounds to me like it is the modem. there is a DHCP license that needs to be refreshed. either that, or it also sounds like a wireless network problem with you being too far away from the connection.

This sounds more like an ISP problem to me...
Why you say? because this EXACT same thing happened to me and after literally months of fighting with Charter, they finally found the problem and repaired their faulty equipment in my neighborhood.

Sounds like wireless to me as well. I have never heard of any mainstream isp having an issue like this. I have verizon and have had 100% reliability from them. I would try an alternate browser if your not using wireless, or eliminating a router and connecting directly to the modem.

Thanks for all the replies. My PC is connected directly to my modem, no wireless. I downloaded an update of IE and so far, all is good. If it goofs off again, I'll get a new modem. Thanks for all the help. You guys are way better than a $60 phone call to emachines.

IMHO it blows IE6 and IE7 out of the water, especially with it's ability to let you customize with add-ons and is rated more secure as well. |

Well unfortunately, my problem came back after a few days. When I go to Control Panel and try to repair the connection, it goes through the IP address, ARP cache but then it gets hung up on Clearing NetBT. If I do that after unplugging my modem, that usually helps temporarily. I've been having these issues since the first time I was unable to successfully repair my connections so it seems like it could be important. Also, someone is regularly hacking my email. I change my password about once a week, but they keep coming back and sending out spam under my email. I don't leave 'remember me' checked. Any thoughts on these items before I get a new modem? Thanks again.

I am 100% certain that your issues are with your ISP... I had the exact same problem...
As for your email, how do you know, or what makes you think you are being hacked...

Firefox all the way, but prefer 1.5.x vs 2.0, because the x for each tab is the same location, so i can close 15 tabs quickly.

How do you know if mail is being sent from your email address? Is it in your sent mail? If not he may be merely spoofing the address. What do you use for email address? if it's something like hotmail, he doesn't need to ever enter your password to get access to your mailbox due to an insecurity in their system, unforutantly. gmail is becoming increasingly popular, or i host my own server which provides me with @serial.cc for what ever i want. I'd be happy to hook you up with your own pop3 mail, which you can use with outlook express, which i personally prefer to any web-based email. If it's not hotmail then i'm not sure, depending on who it is.

I have two domains that I pay for... www.two-slackers.com and www.littleboylou.com both currently point to the www.littleboylou.com site (my son). I have mail hosting for both as well.

How about Virtual Memory. I often get a message that says my virtual memory is too low and windows is increasing its size. It doesn't really seem to coincide with my connection problems, but who knows. My son installed this mini golf game that takes up a lot of memory around the time my problems began.
I guess they are just spoofing my email as they don't show up in my sent email. BTW- what can you do to stop it? |

Regarding your connection problems:
From the way you describe the problem, it sounds like your DNS lookups are timing out after a while. The next time this happens, fire up a command (DOS) prompt: Goto the start menu and type in "cmd" Hit OK. then type: ping www..com The output should look like this - Quote:
Quote:
Which should produce a result like the first one above. If it does not, saying request timed out, then you have either a DHCP issue, an unreliable DSL modem, or some kind of software problem with Windows, which seems unlikely. (Unless other, non-internet related software get's all goofy and slow along with IE) If it says something like "network unreachable" then you might have a bad network card, or some kind of network card driver issues. If the "ping 64.233.161.147" produces an ouput like the first one I have listed, you seem to have a DNS issue. You can try using the "Open DNS" servers listed here. Follow the instructions on this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/windows_xp.php This is pretty standard tech support stuff. Has Verizon not done anything like this with you? As a last point, you don't have Norton Internet Security installed do you? Last edited by greggbzz; 03-17-2007 at 08:47 PM. |
