Cleaning your MAF (mass air sensor) Tip

Ive been doing this about every 6 months and seems to help keep the car running at its best.
I take a bottle of std white vinegar
lg clear bowl
and 1 stock Mass air sensor

Set the sensor in the bowl, and add vinegar till
it rises just above the wires inside
Leave over nite
in the morning, rinse with water if you want and re-install
sensor in car
White vinegar is a mild acid thats why I use it.
Cleans any oil and dirt from the sensative wires
and helps keep your car running better.

(Thanks for the tip - I'll actually give that a go. If I stuff up my MAF I'll be sure to at least add the excess to the next batch of deep fried potato snacks.)

Shouldn't you use CRC electronics parts cleaner? I use vinegar to clean other metal surfaces and noticed after you take it out you can get a white film over what you just cleaned. I used CRC on it and it worked well.

I used crc on it twice and didn't have much luck. So now I'm trying to use vinegar. I'd like to see who's had luck with which method.

Can you confirm it's even dirty? It may be a wiring issue? Another (confirmed working) MAF could be substituted to confirm.

Many will know all of what is involved, but for those who are not sure, here is a data I wrote some time ago for another thread, which may prove helpful.

MAF measurement is achieved by heating with an electric current, a wire/gauze/grid whatever, that is suspended in the engine’s air stream. The wire's electrical resistance increases with the temperature, which limits electrical current flowing through the circuit. When air flows past the wire, the wire cools, decreasing its resistance, which in turn allows more current to flow through the circuit. As more current flows, the wire’s temperature increases until the resistance again reaches an equilibrium.

N.B. The amount of CURRENT required to maintain the wire’s electrical resistance is directly proportional to the MASS of air flowing past the wire.

If air density increases due to an atmospheric pressure or temperature change, but the moving air volume remains constant, the denser air will conduct more heat from the wire, so that as a result, higher mass airflow will be indicated.
