Makes you wonder if the front lip splitters provide any downforce to the front wheels, or at least improve stability at speed.

Interesting numbers. If the downforce was that much, it wouldn't surprise me at all as this car seems really planted at speed...

On Friday morning before going to work, I'll use a tape measure to gets some specs on my SVX's rear wing. May shed a little light on whether Subaru designed this wing like a upside-down airplane wing???

at speeds over 110 my spoilered 95 seems quite planted to the road, then again it always feels that way so i dunno...

That's one of the nicest features of the car. Most cars I've had at 100+MPH give me the feeling of "Oh $h!T if I twitch wrong I'm gonna die!", but the SVX is completely stable at 130. I figure the speed-sensitive steering helps keep it from getting squirrelly, too. Maybe it is the spoiler.

Ok. I am bored here. I should be working on dynamical systems and statistics and probabilities for engineers, but I am not. This lift thing has got me thinking.

So, by my calculations, with a fair amount of error due to graph interpretation and size assumptions, I've determined the downforce to be approximately 37 Newtons (8.4 pounds of force--not to be confused with pounds of mass) at 60mph.

Nevertheless, I can improve the accuracy of my calculations with some help.

Anyone have the dimensions of the spoiler? I need the length and the distance from the top to bottom so I can find the frontal area.

Also, in the equation, it should be noted that velocity is squared, so the faster you go, the lift gets much greater versus a linear relationship.

Tis true for high speed driving. The faster you drive, the greater the energy needed to overcome the resistance due to air.

Also, when I have some more accurate numbers, I will post my work so you guys can look at it.

My car's character changes totally at speeds well under some of those mentioned here. Planted? More like lowered onto rails. And this with no wing, spoiler, or control surface liberated from a salvaged airliner. Clearly, this is a function of a well-engineered suspension system and slippery silhouette which creates "road-hugging" aerodynamic force by design.

Perhaps the cross-section of the factory wing does provide a bit of "negative lift" at high speeds, but you'd likely get more downforce on the rear wheels (without the drag) by topping-off your gas tank.

Or do what I do: Keep a couple hundred pounds' worth of gear in the trunk.

I figured I'd post a picture of an airfoil for anyone who isn't familiar...

Basically the air on the top and the bottom split at the front and come together at the back at the same time, but the air over the curved side must travel farther in the same ammount of time as the air on the bottom so it must travel faster, this higher speed produces a lower air pressure and thus lift or downforce depending on what side is curved.

Sure. That's why I always try to keep 'er over a hundred in the snow, knowing that the downforce is beneficial in those high speed manuvers around sand trucks.

At least that was my explanation to officer Murphy.

Now if I can just get him to read these posts, maybe I can avoid slammer time.

Ron (Snowjobs R Us).
