Power Locks

My car always locks me out! When I start the engine, when I get out and close the door, it locks! I need to shut off the engine or leave a window open or carry an extra key. I have an after market alarm system in my car and my 1992 svx does not have any power lock switches. Can anyone help? I don't mind losing the power locks, as long as I can get out of the car without getting locked out.

Turn the car off before you get out?

Sounds like the aftermarket alarm is mis-wired.

What kind of alarm? How do you normally arm it?

This scenario, locking up a running car is an alarm option. It is suppose to be a good thing.

Read the manual of your aftermarket alarm. It's in there somewhere on how to turn off the feature.

I had the same problem with mine, and after getting it rewired properly, it doesn't do it any more.

This morning, I went out to my car, cranked it, pulled the key out of the ignition, locked the door, and went back inside to chill [well, de-chill, technically] for a few minutes.

I figured this was another of the car's cold-weather features, like the wiper-park switch. People always gawked when I pulled the key out in my old Chevy, too.

Is this not standard? Can you not remove the key from the ON position?

My alarm system is valet. The manual indicates it has an on/off option to the power locks. But it does not tell me how to shut it off or where to find it. I bought the car with this alarm already installed, so I can't call the installer. Any ideas?

What brand/model of alarm do you have?

I can do that on my first SVX, but not on the second. Until I bought the second, I thought it was standard too

Contact DEI or look at their website & see if they have the installer's manual. Valet is a subsidiary of Directed (DEI). Can't help you more without knowing a model number. If that doesn't work, try a circuit city or best buy installer and see if they will take pity...if it's a relatively new model most DEI use the same sort of programming procedure

My alarm system is valet model 554R. I looked up the manual on the internet, but I can't seem to find the answer to my problem.
Thank you for all your responses!

Try searching "passive arming" or "forced passive arming".

I just found the definitions for passive and forced passive arming on Directed's site:

Passive Arming
When placed in this mode, the security system will arm itself 30 seconds after customer leaves the vehicle. Even if you forget to arm the system, passive arming will protect the vehicle from would-be thieves. This feature can be used in conjunction with power door locks and windows to fully secure the vehicle. *See Active Arming.

Forced Passive Arming
The next level of passive arming. Forced Passive Arming ensures that even if you leave your car door open, the system will arm and bypass that particular zone (door, sensor, switch etc.) after one hour. Passive arming must be selected for this feature to be enabled. Great if you leave your vehicle in a hurry and left it unsecured, Forced Passive Arming ensures you are protected always. Use an existing switch in the vehicle as your hidden override switch. Pick your secret switch, and the number of pulses - no thief will ever find it!

I sincerely feel your lock up problems is an actual option that needs to be turned off. I personally would email directed to find out how.

Here is the instal manual for an older model. If you're lucky, DEI might not have changed the programming procedure on your model.
