How much damage

national tire and battery F'd up... Heres what happened

They put new tires on the front of my car (yeah replace all at the same time, but my rears are actually very close to the 5/32s rule or whatever it is)
well, instead of putting the 225/50/16s that i purchased(225 is on the reciept) there are 245/50/16s on my car... definitly 1.3 inch difference in circumference...

i could tell something was wrong, but couldn't figure out what.. so i put it in FWD for the 330 or so miles it is from my house to school.. I then put it back in AWD and couldn't figure out what was causing the problems.. probably put about 100 miles on it like this (tried to drive as little as possible)... end result, i figure out what size the tires really are, now i'm trying to get in writing that if "the awd or transmission" fails within the next 6 months, that they will be liable for it... how likely, under the driving circumstances i described, will it be for my transfer clutch, or transmission to fail? just wondering whether i should REALLY push the issue of getting something in writing, or not.

so you have 245 in the front and 225 in tha back? mmm go back to the shop and change them... they won't have any effect on anything in the car, mine are 245X45X17 , everything is great, no probs whatsoever...

Greg,

If you know a sympathetic mechanic or someone at the local dealer, I'd ask them for a statement of what might happen with that much mis-match, then get a copy of that to the tire store. While I "feel" (no facts to back me) like you haven't done damage, I'll bet you took a year or so life expectancy off the transfer clutches - I mean something had to be slipping in there.

I would agree. I would let the tire store know that there is possible damage and ask what they are willing to do. You can only try to work with them.

Try to be nice to the tire store first. Then bring in the statement. Then bring in the lawyer.

I've been there.

I had a tire place do the same thing. Unfortunately I didn't get anything to show any damage done. since it happend, its taken a good 3-6 seconds to shift into reverse (Subafreak will atest to this lol). Other then that, it shifts fine. I have a slight flair in my shifts now :/ but Its been doing this for quite some time....Its been a little over a year since this all happend. And I traveled around 200 miles on it.

Adjust the band now and save the box.

Harvey.

Tyre mismatch.

The distance that you drove should not have hurt the transfer clutch.
But Iwould take it to the dealer, get them to tell you, if they think it would damage it, then you have something to reinforce your complant with the tyre place.

Harvey.

It's a shame they put the wrong size tires on the front, but you were not doing the car any favors by replacing only the fronts in the first place. If the fronts were more worn than the rears, that means you weren't rotating the tires like you should anyway. The most I'd hold the shop to would be tires of the correct size. Anything else sounds like your responsibility at this point.

Rotate the tires (front to back) often and replace tires as a set.

Mismatched tires would damage the transfer clutch, but that's it. There's no reason mismatched tires would cause damage to the rest of the tranny unless you didn't keep an eye on the fluid and it got badly burned.

... the fronts wore because of bent tie rods... if i had rotated them (how many times do you rotate the tires in 7000 miles) all 4 of my tires would have been useless... as it is, the rear tires still fit within the "accepted" limits of wear. now as a solution to this problem, they're buying me two new tires at a competitor, to put on the rear, so that i will have 245-50s all the way around... it will screw up my speedo a bit... but not to much, and i'll have 4 brand new tires... now i just have to replace those tie rods stat.

Yeah, i understand the problems of even slight differences in size... however, theres a difference between taking an acceptable risk to cut costs, and negligent abuse.
