Timing belt...

I have a 92 SVX with 136K... Im preparing a little list of mechanincal\tune up, list for the new year. What I gather is the belt needs to be changed every 60K. Should the tensioners be changed as well? Or should that just be a "look in there and decide" deal? Also, is this the sorta engine that will basically destroy itself if the timing belt breaks? Thanks. Sonny

The EG33 is a "non interference" engine. It will not destroy itself if the timing belt breaks.

Although the service interval for timing belt says 60K, a federal mandate in '95 stipulated that timing belts in California be made to last 100K. I would think that manufactureres would not make a separate timing belt for Californians, ergo, you can probably be save at a 90K timing belt change. Of course, if you're at 136K and the timing belt has NEVER been changed, you're way overdue.

If you have the timing belt changed and you're unsure of the condition of the water pump, go ahead and have the water pump changed also. It could save you money down the road. What I mean is, it takes the same amount of labor to get to the water pump as it does to get to the timing belt. If you have your timing belt changed, then, three months down the road your water pump goes out, then, you'll pay for that labor all over again.

I wouldn't replace it unless it was bad, I've not had to replace one on any Subaru I've owned, some with as high as 175k on them.
Just my thoughts,
